Edinburgh Festival: A Living LegacyThe Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) is one of the world’s largest performing arts extravaganzas that’s been held annually since 1947, devoting 3 weeks in August to classical music concerts, dance shows, opera & ballet productions, theatrical spectacles, visual art exhibitions as well as talks and workshops. Since its inception, organizers have hand-selected renowned international musicians and performers to celebrate the festival’s motto of being “a platform for the flowering of the human spirit”. Today, over 150,000 music & arts lovers attend the Edinburgh Festival performances, concerts and art events at charming historic theatres & concert halls throughout the enchanted city, including The Hub on Castlehill in Edinburgh Scotland. |

After WWII, Rudolf Bing (GM of Glyndebourne Opera Festival) envisioned Edinburgh as a renascent cultural centre of music, drama, theatre, opera, ballet & graphic art. Urged by a desire to foster post-war artistic expression & uplift the human spirit in a charming setting, Bing rallied support, invited international performers, and in 1947 the first Edinburgh International Festival made its début.
That inaugural event, which drew talent from around the world by invitation only, inspired independent productions on the “fringe” (leading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and more than a dozen other festivals) and placed Edinburgh on the cultural map as one of the most important arts centres in the world. Edinburgh Festivals now include a Film Festival, Art Festival, Festival Fringe (surpassing EIF as the largest arts festival in the world), Jazz & Blues Festival, the Military Tattoo, as well as Book & Science festivals, and are all a direct result of Bing’s initial vision. What began as a quest for a cultural home for the arts away from conflict continues by exploring culture & conflict. With an emphasis on concertos, symphonies, opera, ballet, dance, theatre, intimate conversations and workshops, EIF is a feast for classical music & arts connoisseurs, but from June to August there are few places on the planet as alive with colourful multi-genre festivals as Edinburgh Scotland.

Edinburgh International Festival features world-class classical music, opera, ballet, classic & modern dance extravaganzas, large-scale theatrical productions (with top performances selected by the festival director), at the six most renowned theatres, concert halls, and historic venues in Edinburgh. EIF is primarily an event that celebrates classic music and performing arts with internationally acclaimed pianists, choreographers, directors, and actors from around the globe.
