Not ControlledIt is an open-access arts festival where independent productions do whatever they want and are not controlled, scheduled or “booked” to perform by the Fringe Society. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society compiles a list of events so as to make them more accessible, and they run the Box Office, but they don’t set ticket prices. Therefore prices vary greatly - anywhere from free to what you might expect to pay for regular theatre tickets. It’s 25 days of contemporary theatre productions, musicals, operas, spoken word, comedy, circus, cabaret, dance, concerts, children’s shows, art exhibits and wild street performances that are entirely independent. Although an offshoot of the Edinburgh International Festival that began in 1947 (dedicated to classical arts), the Edinburgh Festival Fringe has surpassed its parent and become the standard by which other arts events are measured. The streets of the Royal Mile and hundreds of venues including pubs, churches & quaint historic buildings in Old Town, stage thousands of events by tens of thousands of international performers throughout Edinburgh Scotland. |

Edinburgh Fringe is primarily dedicated to contemporary, often experimental, theatre, comedy & the performing arts. At the heart of the fringe are events peppered with satire, comic absurdities, burlesque, cabaret, music, film, dance & multi-genre musical features from folk to opera. The Festival Fringe is magic, poetry, puppetry & a place to laugh with the best stand-ups comics or be mesmerized by a piece of improve, a solo show or a simple sketch. Performances are held at hundreds of venues throughout Edinburgh, but the action is concentrated around the Royal Mile in Old Town.
Performing groups may be year-round or fringe specific; some are commercial, others not-for-profit. It’s a mélange of amateur & pro projects, but many who got their start at the fringe have gone on to international fame. Famous examples include: Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie, members of Monty Python, Rowan Atkinson, Steve Coogan, Jenny Eclair, Rich Hall & Al Murray. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (held annually since 1947) has earned it’s title as the world’s largest arts festival by attracting tens of thousands of performers to debut their most outstanding work every year, by maintaining the uncensored nature of the event even after the Festival Fringe Society was established, and by inspiring fringe events to spring up around the world, including ones in Australia, South Africa & Canada.

Edinburgh Fringe is one of the world’s ultimate arts experiences situated in a UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Royal Mile, including Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street, Canongate and Abbey Strand, from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Place, plus myriads of quaint alleys & oldworld lanes throughout Old Town and New Town. Cockburn Street & George IV Bridge are main areas of festival action.
Street performers are everywhere, and over 300 small, medium & large venues, as well as bars, cafes, galleries & churches, deliver thousands of shows, exhibits, performances and musical events from comedy cabaret to opera and classical recitals.
