Umbria Jazz: Masters in Perugia

Umbria Jazz Fest is 10 days of concerts and 250+ street (e.g. Corso Vannucci) and piazza performances from noon to late-night; a global “best” jazz event & the largest Italian jazz festival. Each July, jam sessions & master concerts enthral half a million fans with world-class Italian and international artists such as Stefano Bollani Quartet, Buddy Guy, Pat Metheny, Ron Carter, Kurt Elling and Diana Krall + soul-funk-rocker George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. UJ stages have featured B.B. King, Chet Baker and Natalie Cole, also jazz-fusion-master-pianist Chick Corea, Grammy-winner Kenny Garrett, Dizzy Gillespie’s pupil: Wallace Rooney, and 4X Grammy-recipient Chris McBride, at Arena Santa Giuliana on Via Orsini in ancient Perugia, Italy.

About

Umbria Jazz: Masters in Perugia

Umbria Jazz Festival was first held in 1973 at a time when jazz music wasn’t well loved in Italy. But it caught on with a vengeance, eventually hosting legendary artists such as Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespi, Ornette Coleman and Keith Jarret. One reason Umbria Jazz has enraptured Italy and the world is due to enriching its playbills with live performances of gospel, blues, soul, zydeco, marching band, rhythm ’n’ blues, world music, Cuban beats + latin salsa, and even pop rock. Over the years, UJ has featured non-jazz headliners like Elton John, Carlos Santana, Prince, James Brown, Donna Summer, Eric Clapton, Simply Red, Phil Collins and Sting. One odd duet on Umbria Jazz lineups includes a crowd-luring Lady Gaga spectacular with Tony Bennett’s “Cheek to Cheek”.

Jazzy Jams & Arena Concerts

Originally, Umbria Jazz shows were free, and although headline-grabbing performances are now ticketed events where approx. 35,000 fans/year pay to witness multi-genre music masters, 450,000 visitors still partake of free garden, theatre, street & piazza concerts, as well as joining the jazzy vibe at jam sessions hosted by funky wine bars, cafes and restaurants. Venues include quaint & quirky haunts, a stone mansion hotel (Il Cantico della natura in Montesperello), Teatro Morlacchi, Oratorio Santa Cecilia, various piazzas, and the main stadium: Arena Santa Giuliana in the heart of Perugia.

Umbria Jazz is world-class masters & jazzy piazza jams in an ancient city in Italy!

Umbria Jazz Present & Past

Pop + Jazz - UJ has a double soul: next to “classical jazz” there are also performances not specifically jazz. For example, British-Lebanese singer MIKA, renowned for pop-glam-rock & new wave music (and well-loved in Italy after starring in Le Invasioni Barbariche), also graces Umbria Jazz with a bit of popish Boum Boum Boum, immediately following his other concert - Concerto Sinfonico Affinis Consort - in Como Italy.

In the Beginning…

Umbria Jazz was christened on August 23, 1973. The first concerts, initially alll free, were a touring shows that took place at Piazza IV Novembre in Perugia, The Roman theater in Gubbio, Villalago, Piazza del Popolo in Todi, the Albornoz Fortress in Spoleto and Piazza San Francesco in Umbertide. As time passed, Umbria Jazz Fest became such a success that it led to serious problems of organization and... traffic congestion, e.g. “Count Basie once failed to reach the stage, trapped in a traffic jam”. Because of this, Umbria Jazz Music Festival changed in 1982: the concerts were held in Perugia with headline performances at Arena Santa Giuliana becoming ticketed events.

  • Free concerts & events did continue, some at the arena, others at Peacock theater, Oratorio Santa Cecilia, Piazza IV Novembre & Carducci Gardens.

Perugia

Perugia (capital of the Umbria region) is an ancient city of Etruscan origin, built on a green hill on the right of the Tiber, at 500 meters above sea level. It houses monuments from the Etruscan period, like the Tomb of the Volumnii & the Etruscan walls + sculptures, paintings, engravings & mosaics (perfectly preserved) from the Roman & Renaissance periods.

  • Perugia is near Assisi, Gubbio, Siena, Florence & Rome.
  • It’s also near medieval hilltop villages like Montepulciano & Pienza, and Val d’Orcia - a World Heritage Site - in Tuscany.
