Tauron Nowa Muzyka: Nu-Avant-gardeTauron Nowa Musyka Festival is 4-days of avant-garde electronic sounds, an award-winning event that, since 2006, sets Polish trends by featuring non-commercial performers alongside renowned producers of nu-jazz, EDM and other sub-genres. It has a kinship with street culture and doesn’t shy away from the dark side set amidst the ghosts of a dismal coal mining ambiance. Although its vibe resonates outside popular genres, it doesn’t alienate the masses, reflected by its growth from 1,000 fans to nearly 20,000. It delivers edgy music, multimedia and film screenings, but Tauron’s flavour is intertwined with its habitat - the eerie coal mine towers, shafts and industrial warehouses of Kopalni Węgla Kamiennego in Katowice, Upper Silesia, Poland. |
||
Tauron Nowa Muzyka is back at the old mine, in the renovated Nowe Muzeum Śląskie, amidst the magnificently eerie and fabulously dreary industrial relics, mine shafts, furnaces, towers, warehouses and halls that operated from 1823-1999. But Tauron Festival isn’t loved only for its shadowy eccentric dark-side, or its spectacular lighting, or for opening nights at a funky art gallery, or closing nights at a chic jazz club, or for film screenings, but for its MUZYKA. From its inception, Tauron Festiwal has promoted nu-avant-garde, innovative, experimental, advanced, underground, non-commercial, cutting-edge and unknown talent alongside world-renowned producers of nu-jazz, breakbeat, minimal techno, IDM, EDM and other funky sounds.
Line-ups have included bass-intense Cuban-funk IDM-breakcore producer Otto Von Schirach, jazzy Japanese hip-hop DJ Krush, IDM krautrock duo Mouse on Mars, layering-beatboxer Jamie Lidell, sound distorter Clark, afro-futurist shangaan-electro producer Nozinja, nu-jazz drum & bass musician Amon Tobin, psychedelic-electro-acoustic DJ Prefuse 73, noisician Paula Temple, LGBT hip-hop rapper Cakes Da Killer, Jackson and his computerband, Grammy-nominated Hot Chip, hyperduber Kode9, ambient-IDM producer John Hopkins, folktronica-IDM composer Caribou, Scuba, John Talabot, Little Dragon, Mount Kimbie and evolving acid-jazz-chillwave-downtempo sounds by Bonobo.
Tauron Nowa Muzyka - where the dark side meets nu-sound at a coal mine in Silesia!
One of the feature attractions of Tauron New Music Festival is its location - a non-operational coal mine district in Katowice, Kopalni Węgla Kamiennego Katowice, with old mining buildings, including one that’s been converted into the New Museum of Silesia (Nowe Muzeum Śląskie), and other structures that serve as concert halls, such as for the Silesian Philharmonic. Between industrial relics and two of the original furnace towers, named Bartosz and Warsaw, giant stages and tents are erected. It’s a funky, bizarre ambiance, almost eerie, amongst the vestiges of coal mining exhaust towers, warehouses and production halls, surrounded by the ghosts of Silesian mining history, enhanced by lighting, acoustic effects and the avant-garde electronic sounds of Tauron Nowa Muzyka.
