Sundance Film Festival, loved by indie film fans & pros, where cult classics-to-be debut, get reviewed & win awards: Grand Jury, World Cinema, Directing, Documentary & Short Film. Its mission: to unite local & global talent with US viewers via world-wide submissions, Master Classes, New Frontier Day Labs and Native Documentary Short Screenings. Chaired by Robert Redford, having given Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino & Paul Thomas Anderson their big breaks, and debuting flicks like Whiplash, Napoleon Dynamite & Reservoir Dogs, SFF is also about its setting: a winter retreat with HQ at the Marriot, Filmmaker Lodge at the Elks Building, screenings at the Egyptian, all amid ski resorts on snowy peaks 30 min from Salt Lake City in Park City Utah.

Sundance Film Festival: Top Indie Exposé

SFF has developed international recognition in the field for good reason, as the largest independent film festival in the US, it has a history of showcasing up-and-coming directors & films, and helping future indie talent along the way. A little on the small side, it hosts about 45,000 fans, while still drawing a lot of stars, even to a point where, in 2007, initiatives were put in place to ward off paparazzi.

Labs, Workshops + Music

Budding filmmakers are at the centre of SFF’s philosophy, from showcasing new talent to accepting submissions to be considered for the festival so fans can view their work, and even having the chance to win awards through their submissions. Throughout all of this the goal set out by Redford on founding the Sundance Institute was to help nurture talent, which is why they have workshops available throughout, open to all artists: New Frontiers Day Lab explores and discusses defining projects; Composers Day Lab provides conversations, presentations and networking with industry professionals; Shortlabs gives first-hand insight into writing, directing and getting seen. Sundance Institute also gives grants and programmes to nurture and sustain careers.

"Music and film go together like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" which explains the nightly indie-alt-pop-rock-country-Americana-folk concerts at the Sundance ASCAP Music Café on Main Street.

Beyond Cinema & Schmoozing - Park City Winter Sports

January in Park City offers a lot more than celeb schmoozing, film talks, and warm cinemas for indie film fanatics. There are snowy mountain adventures, snowmobiling, dog sledding, snowboarding, skiing, hot-tubbing, or taking local food, museum, ghost & history tours, or getting a peek inside the Olympic Winter Games Museum, while staying in a luxury lodge, villa or ski resort. And if you happen to have your own jet, you can arrive in style at Russ McDonald airfield at the private Heber City Airport not far from Park City.

  • It’s situated just half an hour from Salt Lake City.
  • SFF events take place at over a dozen large & small venues in and around Park City as well as some in Salt Lake City, Ogden and the Sundance Mountain Resort.
  • Each venue has amenities you would expect from a theatre, cinema, cafe, gallery or public building, however some have concession stands, and others do not.

SFF Canada Goose Festival Base Camp

ASCAP Music Café
  • Sundance ASCAP Music Café is at Rich Haines Gallery also on Main Street and of course has eats and drinks but has really limited space, is only for over 21s, and mostly gets filled with credential holding pros.
Sundance Festival Co-op
  • Festival Co-op is near base camp on Main Street, and thanks to sponsors, is a nice place to warm up in areas that, in the past, have included a Chocolate Tasting Room, places to freshen up, sip coffee, munch snacks and use complimentary Wi-Fi.
Sundance Filmmaker Lodge
  • Filmmaker Lodge in the Elks Building also on Main Street, is cosy and has lots of amenities, but it’s only open to the public if space is available.

Park City Utah weather in January is freezing cold, in fact it’s the coldest month of the year, yet often sunny. It’s perfect weather for dog-sledding, skiing & watching films inside a nice cosy theatre, going to Cinema Café and chatting with filmmakers while sipping coffee & munching treats, or dressing up and going to one of the nightly pop-alt-rock-folk music concerts at the Sundance ASCAP Music Café on Main Street. Prepare for winter with coats, boots, scarves & sports equipment, or just a woolly sweater and a Sundance Film Festival programme!
