Sónar: Avant-garde Electro TrendsFor three days in June, Barcelona pulses with a digital heartbeat that pumps sonic juice through the world’s electronic music veins. It’s Sónar. And it beats to the rhythm of avant-garde experimental-electro-techno, underground-house, trance-dance-pop, hip-hop-dubstep, grime-breakbeat and high-tech multimedia as the global showground for the latest electronic music producers, DJs & audiovisual designers to present genre-bending creations to over 120,000 fans and industry pros. Sonar Music Festival of Advanced Music & New Media Art is where innovators become trendsetters during Sonar by Day at Fira Montjuïc, and where digital masters like Massive Attack, Noisia, Bonobo & Ricardo Villalobos shake the stages of Fira Gran Via at Sonar by Night. |

Sonar’s stages were christened in the mid 90s with electro-vibes by genre-bending musicians like Holger Czukay and his anarcho-punk, krautrock, ambient-electro-pop-world-music, as well as vinyl-turntablist DJ/producer Sven Väth with his trance-techno-ambient-house mixes, and drone-house-techno-chill-arctic-sounds by Geir Jenssen – Biosphere. With these, and hundreds of other ground-breaking music pioneers (like the new-wave-synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, electro-dance-techno-micro-house producer Ricardo Villalobos & jazz-rap-alternative-hip-hop trio De La Soul), the scene was set for Sonar to be one of the most important electronic music festivals in the world. And it is. Over two decades of cutting-edge music, visual arts and music industry conferences, has sealed its reputation as a trendsetting avant-garde festival, and the reason 120,000 fans & pros flock to Barcelona each June.
Sonar Barcelona unfolds at the two Fira centres in the heart of the city: Sonar by Day at Fira Montjuïc showcasing emerging talent (plus Sónar+D where creators & industry experts network), as well as concert extravaganzas by the world’s greatest DJs & producers at Sonar by Night in the Fira Gran Via complex.
Sonar Music Festival has gone global with events in Reykjavik, Stockholm, Mexico City, Cape Town, Tokyo and other international centres that change annually.
Sonar Music Festival - one of the world’s top avant-garde electronic music events!
Sónar Festival Internacional de Música Avanzada y New Media Art de Barcelona, which is the event’s official name, but most commonly known as Sonar Barcelona, is divided into two distinct events: Sonar by Day at Fira Montjuïc in the Plaça d’Espanya where there are 4 stages: SonarVillage, SonarHall, SonarDôme, SonarComplex, and ten minutes away, the site of Sonar by Night at Fira Gran Via in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat where electronic music masters let loose sonic & visual orgasms on 4 stages: SonarClub, SonarLab, SonarPub, SonarCar.
Sonar by Day incorporates visual arts and film exhibits, music conferences, labs, indie-pro networking meetings at Sónar+D, and a mix of experimental music presentations as well as a featured daytime Sonar line up. Day guests have included electro-pop pioneers Kraftwerk and their 3D show, the synthpop-alternative-new-wave-dance-house duo Pet Shop Boys, and electro-reggae-fusion music guru Major Lazer. The diurnal Sonar line up also embraces less-known talents such as Alizzz, Arnau Obiols, Kidsuke, and the Mallorcan danceable-electronic group Jansky that add a delicate touch to their work through Catalan vocal sounds by Laia MaLo, plus the atypical orchestral performances by sound researchers known as the Barcelona Laptop Orchestra who, as you might expect, instead of playing instruments, use laptops.
Sonar by Night is where the world’s most outstanding electronic music creators blast-off on the main SonarClub stage and on three other stages (which have evolved over the years and are today giant sonic and visual platforms) called SonarLab, SonarPub and SonarCar.
It unfolds at the Fira Gran Via complex, which is one of the largest convention centres in Europe with 8 gigantic pavilions, 45 restaurants and over 200,000 square meters of indoor and outdoor space connected by giant walkways. Since alcoholic beverages and a variety of food choices are available at the Sonar by Night venue, bringing your own food or alcohol onto the Sonar Music Festival grounds is strictly prohibited. Note: There are no on-site cash machines at the night venue so come prepared.
Sónar International Festival of Advanced Music & New Media Art is the most renowned music festival in Spain, an import cutting-edge electronic music event in Europe, and one of the top trendsetting, genre-bending sound & visual arts conferences in the world with 3 days of mind-bending concerts, multimedia arts exhibits & music industry meetings. The core culture of Sónar revolves around electronic music and creative multimedia arts. Over the course of more than twenty years, Sonar has been responsible for discovering some of the best electronic talent on the planet. Today, Sonar Barcelona continues to uncover the most innovative, experimental, avant-garde and ground-breaking electronic music and visual arts creators and presents electro-dance-pop extravaganzas in a dual event comprised of Sonar by Day at Fira Montjuïc, with music and visual arts on the verge of trending, and Sonar by Night with massive concerts featuring performances by the worlds greatest DJs, sound/film producers & electronic dance music creators at gigantic parties that shake the foundations of the Fira Gran Via complex.

Season & WeatherSeason: Summer
Temperature: 18 to 25 °C
Barcelona weather is pleasantly warm in June. The city benefits from the Mediterranean climate with long sunny days, highs that seldom go above 30 °C and agreeably fresh evenings. Prepare for sun-drenched days and cool nights with sea breezes. It doesn’t rain much in June, so the open-air concerts at Parc de Montjuïc and outdoor events around the avant-garde Gran Via structures are delightful! Think Slinky & Sexy - sandals, skimpy shorts, slinky sun-dresses, bikinis on the beach, a hat and sunglasses for daytime Sonar events, and sexy clubbing attire for partying at Sonar by Night. |
