St. Patrick’s Festival Dublin is more than just a shamrock-clad-booze-up (though it is definitely that too) dating back to Saint Patrick’s death in 461AD, 500,000 fans celebrate in a city lit completely green: starting with the modern parade, a show of pride for the Irish, with big brass bands playing the theme “March to Dublin”; City Fusion celebrating integration and inclusion with theatre, street performance, dance and circus; and colourful & inspiring pageants drawing in crowds. Irish Craft Beer and Whisky Village draws in 12,000 fans for local beer, cider, whisky and artisan food, for a taste and tipple, or try the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival down by the bay for something fresh, or run it all off in the 5k road race, but make sure you’re dressed in green! Fans can slow the weekend down with culture, board games and sandwiches at The Ultimate Sunday, or pick the pace back up at the Funfairs, either way, fans will leave understanding why Dublin is so beloved by the locals.

Dub-crawls in Temple Bar and the Guinness Storehouse

Considering that traditionally this is/was a religious weekend where Irish folk would plant potatoes, the ‘merry’ culture is slightly unsuspecting, with bars and pubs only being allowed to open on the day in the 1970s. However, if it is a pub crawl that fans are after, then there is nowhere better than the Temple Bar area: Porterhouse, three stories of Dublin’s oldest microbrewery; Auld Dubliner, for that traditional music-feel; Palace, Dublin’ older bar and literary hangout; Hub is a taste of modern Irish, dirty-rock-locals; if fans are still standing at midnight, PantiBar, Spy/Wax and Tripod will see them through to the morning.

No Dub-crawl would be complete without a trip to the Guinness storehouse, with a 7 story tour starting and ending with a pint of the black stuff; 360 degree views of the Dublin skyline; pint-pulling lessons; multi-sensory tasting and an 18th and 19th century dining hall experience. Fans can grab an Irish coffee from Vice Coffee Inc. for some next morning hair of the dog if they can handle it!
