Rock am Ring: Throbbing Rock-MetalRock am Ring throbs with rock, metal & electronic thunder during three days of engineered sonic pandemonium on gigantic outdoor stages at Mendig Air Base in Germany, about 80 km from Cologne / 100 km from Frankfurt. Since 1985 it’s satisfied headbangers with artists like Black Sabbath, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Marilyn Manson + legendary David Bowie and classic Aerosmith, later Green Day and Kings Of Leon. Rock am Ring, and its twin Rock im Park at Zeppelinfeld in Nuremberg, that features the same headliners, attract about 160.000 fans each June. With hot new acts + fresh artists + hardcore line-ups, the heady festival duo are mega events with a cultish following that remain two of the largest rock-metal celebrations in the world. |

Since 1985, Rock am Ring stages have throbbed with the thunderous vibrations of the world’s most renowned rock, metal, punk, indie and alternative sounds, featuring hundreds of top rock and heavy metal bands, and pulsing with an eclectic list of international stars that began with Chris de Burgh, Foreigner, Huey Lewis, Joe Cocker, REO Speedwagon and U2. The all-star line-ups continued with Kiss, Aerosmith, Tragically Hip, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice In Chains, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Smashing Pumpkins, Arctic Monkeys, The Prodigy, Marilyn Manson, Kings Of Leon, Linkin Park & Green Day. It’s an award winning European festival, one of Germany’s most popular open-air rock events, and a three-day celebration that attracts a cultish following of German and international fans to the tune of around 160,000 a year.
Rock am Ring & Rock im Park
The headline acts on the Rock am Ring stages at at Flugplatz Mendig/Vulkaneifel, which is the Mendig Air Base, are also featured about 400 km away at the twin event called Rock im Park at Zeppelinfeld in Nürnberg. The two festivals run simultaneously, with a one day difference to allow for headliners to perform at both. Rock am Ring and Rock im Park Festivals have had a few line-up facelifts with new artists and electronic music acts added, plus 2 dance tents, including a Freaky 90’s and funky electro disco, but it’s still about rocking round-the-clock, and with onsite camping, food, bars, toilets and hot showers, the partying needn’t stop for 3 full days!
Rock am Ring throbs with the thunderous boom of an award winning rock-metal line-up!
In recent years, the Rock am Ring lineup has included diverse acts such as hard rocking Australian Airborne, German rapper Cro, American punk rockers Green Day, English electronic masters The Prodigy, Californian rockers Linkin Park and legendary heavy metal and thrash metal pioneers Metallica. Other hard rock musicians like American Papa Roach and heavy metal bands such as Danish Volbeat have been interspersed with mainstream names like Shakira and alternative groups including New Zealand’s The Naked and Famous.
German rock band Bosse, the alternative Texan rock group (with one of the longest names)…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, as well as American rapper Michael Jones also known to his fans as Wax have formed part of the new Rock am Ring ecclectic line-up.
Stages have seen progressive rock-punk-metal groups like Coheed and Cambria, the bluesy-folk-garage beats of Hanni El Khatib, American-Christian-metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada, and the German electronic metalcore group We Butter the Bread with Butter.
It’s gotten electric with American pop-punk-metalcore A Day To Remember, Boys Noize, Italian electronic-house-dance-punk by The Bloody Beetroots and French alternative rock band Phoenix.
The core culture of Rock am Ring and Rock im Park (considering it’s almost thirty year musical history) is one of hard rock and heavy metal. Over the years, yet without loosing its edgy metallicness, the Rock am Ring lineup has integrated contemporary genre-bending sounds including pop, rap, hip-hop, electro, dance, house, garage, synth-pop, new-wave and an ever-expanding variety of alternative music styles.
