Reading Music Festival is legendary for having staged rock music highs & lows that date back to the ‘60s (held in Reading since ‘71, but officially named the ‘Reading Festival’ in ‘78), becoming an icon; one of the longest running music festivals in the world. Although it started as an offshoot of a jazz fest in Surrey, it grew roots with headline acts that wrote the pages of music history such as the Rolling Stones, The Who, Moody Blues, Jerry Lee Lewis, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath & nascent stars like Phil Collins with Genesis. It also attracted Supertramp, The Police, Cheap Trick, Motorhead, The Cure, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister, Thin Lizzy, and with rock-metal fans came moshpit madness and a reputation for pelting unappreciated acts off stage with bottles, or turf & mud.
After performances by Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys and The Prodigy, the event expanded to Leeds, and in 1999 shared its line-up with West Yorkshire throngs: The Charlatans, The Chemical Brothers, and again, the funky rockin’ Red Hot Chili Peppers. Today, Reading and Leeds Festivals continue to share line-ups like Queens of the Stone Age, Green Day, Franz Ferdinand, Arcade Fire, Blink-182, Arctic Monkeys, Biffy Clyro and Kasabian, for 80,000 fans in Leeds and 90,000 history-makers at Little Johns Farm on Richfield Avenue in Reading, West Berkshire England.
Reading Festival builds stages for performers who write rock music history!
... it was 1961, and there was a National Jazz Festival in Surrey. And there came to be a tent with acts like Johnny Dankworth & the Clyde Valley Stompers… yes, a long way from the gargantuan stages with screens and light shows…but then, in ‘63 the Rolling Stones & Muddy Waters appeared on the scene, and in ’65 The Who & the Moody Blues, and in ’68 Jerry Lee Lewis, in’69 Pink Floyd, in 1970 Deep Purple & Black Sabbath and finally in 1971 the festival arrived in Reading with Medicine Head & East of Eden, and we can say that Reading was born. But it wasn’t until 1972, while still officially named the “National Jazz, Blues, Folk and Blues Festival”, that it found the place that would become its home at Richfield Avenue, and the first headliners were Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford & Phil Collins as Genesis.
Reading Festival in the ‘70s brought stars like Supertramp, Rory Gallagher, Manfred Mann, The Jam, and in ‘78, at long last, “Reading Festival” became its official name, nicely marked by Paul Weller’s guitar smashing incident. 1979 delivered The Police, Cheap Trick, Motorhead, The Cure & Peter Gabriel, and then came the ‘80s with Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Slade, Iron Maiden, The Kinks, Gillan & Budgie… then more Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister, The Stranglers, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy & Steel Pulse who would go down in Reading Festival history as having been “bottling” off-stage. Then the festival took a break, and in 1986 reopened with Doctor and the Medics, Hawkwind & Killing Joke. In ‘87 Alice Cooper took centre stage along with Georgia Satellites and in ‘88 Iggy Pop, and the infamous Meatloaf “bottling” incident. In ‘89 Reading headlined My Bloody Valentine, Jesus Jones & The Mission.
Reading line-ups in the 90s included The Pixies, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds & Faith No More. Comedy was added in ’91, Nirvana in ’92 and in ’93 the line-up included Rage Against The Machine & Blur, followed by Cypress Hill, Primal Scream & Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1994, then Smashing Pumpkins, the Foo Fighters, Soundgarden & Neil Young in ’95. The late nineties brought Metallica, Beastie Boys, Garbage & The Prodigy until 1999 when Reading expanded to Leeds with Charlatans, Blur, The Chemical Brothers & again, the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Reading & Leeds Festivals shared headliners, which in 2000 included Oasis & Primal Scream, and spread into other genres with Eminem & Queens of the Stone Age. Over the following ten years stars included Travis, Manic Street Preachers, The Prodigy and repeat appearances by Blur, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters, The Cure, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age, Muse and Smashing Pumpkins. It also brought Linkin Park, Green Day, Franz Ferdinand & Arcade Fire.
In recent years, Reading Festival, under the organization of Festival Republic, has brought Blink-182, Arctic Monkeys, Biffy Clyro & Kasabian, attracting around 80,000 annual fans to Leeds and 90,000 to Reading.

There are also bars right and left of Main Stage, and another near the Radio 1 NME Stage with lots of yummy cocktail choices. After-hoursAfter headliners finish on the main stages, late night activities continue at 2 Silent Arenas - one in the red campsite near the funfair, another in the orange campsite. There’s also ActionAid tent, Cinema tent & two funfairs - one in the Arena and another in the red campsite. Seat of LuxuryAside from the regular toilet blocks, there’s also the option of having access to “The Seat of Luxury” for both guys & gals. They offer hot running water, mirrors, perfumes & potions. Although summer weather in Reading is considered moderate, it’s unpredictable in terms of…mmm…rain. Over the years, Reading Festival has made headlines not only for the line-up of stars on its stages, but for its “washout weather”, “torrential rain”, “soggy starts” and “Rain at Reading” attached to images of drenched fans frolicking in the mud. Ergo, we suggest preparing for wetness with good ground cover & tarps if camping, some colourful rain attire for your head & body, your comfiest bright pink Wellies (rubber boots), a pair of clothes you won’t mind leaving in a bin, and a good sense of humour. |
