Bluesfest: Electro-Pop-Rock + BluesOttawa Bluesfest is one of the largest music festivals in North America, spanning 10 days, bursting with motley sounds, featuring not only Canadian headliners such as Tragically Hip, and blues legends like John Mayall, but covering nearly every genre in a series of mini festivals including alternative-indie-punk-power-pop, reggae-moombahton, country-bluegrass, electronic-bass & worldbeat. Guest are as disparate as Lady Gaga and B.B. King, as local as A Tribe Called Red and as international as Björk. Bluesfest is pop-rock-world, blues-folk-jazz-soul mixed with psychedelic-experimental, hip-hop-dubstep-dance and electro-house by producers like Skrillex, Snoop Dogg, Zedd & RL Grime, attracting 300,000+ fans to LeBreton Flats in Ottawa Ontario. |
||
Ottawa Blues Festival may have “blues” in its name, from its bluesy-R&B-rock origins with saxophonist “The Big Man” Clarence Clemons who got things rolling in ’94 (followed by more blues greats like Robert Cray & Buddy Guy), but the ginormous extravaganza it’s become today (with 300,000 fans) is everything… pop-rock-hip-hop-electro-dance… and then some blues.
Covering the gamut of the musical spectrum, Bluesfest has taken to organizing the event into a series of what might be described as mini festivals, with half a dozen stages and a programme spread over ten days, featuring pop celebrities (including Lady Gaga), and hit rock stars like Queens of the Stone Age and Collective Soul as well as country favourites by Lady Antebellum and The Mavericks.
The Bluesfest schedule has encompassed hip-hop by Cypress Hill, Deltron 3030, free-jazz-hip-hop by BadBadNotGood, retro-rock by Styx, Blondie & Barenaked Ladies, indie-electro from Phantogram and synthpop by Tegan & Sara, house-dance by Zedd, trap-bass-hip-hop with RL Grime and Canadian drum-step from Adventure Club. Although Snoop Dog is there rappin’ and Bonobo is electro-trip-hop-acid jazzin’, Ottawa Bluesfest hasn’t entirely forgotten the blues with legends like guitarist John Mayall (think 1966 Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton), some wicked Grinnin’ from John Hammond, Jr. and Vancouver’s charismatic tuba-wielding No BS! Brass Band.
Bluesfest is pop-rock-hip-hop, electro- synthpop, dance-bass and then… some blues!
It’s a ten day mega charity event with multigenre music and incredible line-ups.
It’s ten days – not just a weekend – and it’s been around since 1994.
Bluesfest isn’t just Canada’s largest outdoor music festivals but one of the biggest, most popular, award-winning summer music events in North America. Over ten days, more than a quarter of a million fans make their way to Le Breton Flats in Ottawa Ontario to be a part of one of the greatest blues festivals in the world.
The music is from every genre including rock, roots, gospel, world music, electronic, and yes, even some blues. It’s a festival for dancing to the hottest electronic beats; for die-hard rockers to see their favourite rock bands LIVE, for chilling with roots, blues and jazzy-soul and partaking of rhythms from around the globe.
Over the years, the Bluesfest lineup has included la crème de la crème of the music world such as Ben Harper, James Brown, Sting, Peter Frampton, Van Morrison, KISS, Santana, Manu Chao, Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, The Black Eyed Peas, Tiesto, Soundgarden, Skrillex, The White Stripes and even Snoop Dogg.
Bluesfest is not about making big bucks! It’s a non-profit charitable event.
