Ostroda Reggae: Polish-Jamin’ VibesOstróda Reggae Festival (ORF since 2001) is 4 days of Jamaican vibes (an off-shoot of Ost-Rock Festival), featuring world-renowned artists on 3 stages, attracting 10,000 reggae fans to dance, party, camp and participate in the Czwórka Reggae Contest (a Polish reggae band competition) + eat, drink and buy reggae memorabilia. Ostroda Festiwal headliners have included Jamaican greats like U-Roy, Don Carlos and Luciano, American jazz-funk-dub stars Groundation, British Dub Pistols and Gentleman’s Dub Club, German latin-swing-ska-reggae mixers Jamaram and a long list of Polish reggae stars such as Vavamuffin, Jamal, Tabu, Kamil Bednarek, Ras Luta, Bas Tajpan Bob One and Dancehall Masak-Rah who perform at Czerwone Koszary in Ostróda city, Poland. |
||
Polish-Jamaican vibes at Ostroda Reggae festival are a passionate blend of island roots, folk, swing, hip-hop, latin, jazz, funk, dub, ska, dancehall, rock, afro-Caribbean groove with a hint of pop-rock & soul brewed with Euro-Slavic multi-lingual lyrics and peppered with non-era-specific beats + horns, vocals and even bass-heavy electronic tempos.
Ostróda Reggae isn’t an old-school Marley fest with new bands interpreting old beats, but a celebration of Jamaican roots with legends like U-Roy alongside groups like the Dub Pistols & Gentleman’s Dub Club plus Jamaican-Polish merges such as Dubtonic Kru & David Portasz and dynamic German bands like Jamaram, Skaos & Pow Pow. Then there are the Polish headliners, some who have gained cult status including GrubSon, Vavamuffin, Jamal, Tabu, Ras Luta, and Tallib & Sztoss who deliver a unique version of dancehall-roots-reggae-hip-hop. But what Ostróda does best is unite sounds, stars & groups who form temporary bands such as what Świetliki, Vavamuffin, Paprika Korps and Jamal did by creating Duberman. The festival also incorporates film screenings, workshops and Czwórka Reggae Contest, a Polish reggae band competition that discovers the country’s best jamin’ talent, along with wild partying & camping in a love, peace and ‘don’t worry be happy’ ambiance with mellow Jamaican-inspired Polish revelry.
Ostroda Reggae is roots-dub-ska-funk + multi-lingual lyrics and heady beats!
Ostroda Reggae, as the name suggests, is dedicated to reggae music in all its variations, from Jamaican island roots with traditional rhythmic beats to the latest electronic dub and dubstep mixes by international producers. DJs can be found jammin’ via high-powered sound systems that often fuse afro-Caribbean sounds with swing, latin, jazz, soul & funk. Aside from reggae concerts, the festival features reggae culture related film screenings, visual arts exhibits, workshops, discussions and a place to exhibit and interchange reggae culture history and memorabilia.
There are international food stalls & bars throughout the festival grounds & camping zone, with a freedom-loving island-inspired carnival ambiance that permeates everything.
Ostróda Reggae Festiwal is also renowned for its annual Young Polish Bands Contests – Czwórka Reggae Contest – discovering dozens of talented local groups that have gone on to musical success and to develop the latest reggae sounds often in conjunction with Jamaican musicians. Winning the Czwórka Reggae Contest is about getting recognition and making connections, but also about the cash prizes - the winner receives a PLN 5,000 cash award.Other contests include:
