Moogfest, established in 2004, honors the genius of Robert Moog, inventor of the Moog analog synthesizer. The festival presents a unique combination of music and cutting-edge technology, attracting experimental composers, futurists, engineers & sonic artists from around the world. More than 7,000 fans experience nightly performances by electronic music pioneers & innovators in futuristic pop, jazz, reggae, trance, minimalist, ambient & techno + dance parties dj’d by top producers, experimental films & art installations. By day, conferences examine the future of creativity & workshops by Moog engineers demo the latest sound technology. Moogfest takes place at more than a dozen indoor and outdoor venues in downtown Durham North Carolina, USA.

Moogfest: Synth-Tech-Art-Music

Moogfest, since its founding in 2004, has showcased the most innovative electronic music on the planet. Experimental performances, many with unique formats, in a wide variety of music genres, from hip hop to trance, are performed by pioneers of electronic music, such as Keith Emerson, Tangerine Dream, Devo, Stanley Jordan, Massive Attack, Brian Eno & Gary Numan, as well as hot international acts including Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, M.I.A., Flying Lotus, Moby & The Flaming Lips. More than 100 musical acts are matched by a faculty of futurists, computer scientists, robotics engineers and inventors drawn from major universities and technology companies, including Duke University and Google, both located in Durham. Demos of new electronic instruments and workshops where participants can build their own synth are regular features. A film festival features live original scores, shorts & docs. Site-specific art installations explore experimental sonic and visual art forms.

Public Programming at Moogfest

In addition to the festival’s ticketed events, free programming attracts tens of thousands to Moogfest in technology friendly Durham. A free outdoor stage offers music performances for all ages, while workshops introduce novices to the possibilities of synth. Performances and conferences take place throughout Historic Downtown Durham, outside in parks, at galleries, local hotels & theaters.

Moogfest History

  • Durham is the third location for the festival.

  • Moogfest was first held in New York City from 2004 to 2008.

  • It moved to Asheville North Carolina - Moog Music Co. headquarters - from 2010 to 2013.

  • Dr. Robert Moog organized the first Moogfest to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his invention of the analog synthesizer. The festival was a one-day affair, with a workshop conducted by Moog in the afternoon, followed by an evening concert starring Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, the first musician to tour with a Minimoog.

  • Moog introduced his analog synthesizer at the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival.

  • The Beatles, Mick Jagger and Sun Ra were among the first to use a Moog synthesizer in their music.
