Lollapalooza Music Festival has evolved since Perry Farrell inaugurated it in the early ninties undergoing a series of musical genre changes to become an international destination festival that attracts hundreds of thousands of fans. It has also turned into a South American touring event that’s enthralled Chile, Argentina and Brazil. Despite its origins as an alternative rock and underground music showcase, it’s developed into a gargantuan platform for nearly every popular musical genre from metal to folk to EDM.
The mainstay summer event, held at the sprawling green expanse of Grant Park along the shores of Lake Michigan, is a three-day celebration of American multicultural life including global food stalls at Chow Town, a marketplace called Green Street, an electronic dance music arena for teens, and Kidzapalooza for mini-revellers. Organizers say, "Music is our DNA", and its double helix includes 8 stages with ultra-diverse headliners ranging from Metalica to Mista Cookie Jar & the Chocolate Chips.
Lollapalooza’s head-spinning headline acts have ranged from the legendary industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails to Mumford and Sons and even a little rock-country from Eric Church. In recent years, line-ups have included Artic Monkeys, Kings of Leon, Eminem, hip-hop duo Outkast, Skrillex, Foster The People, folk-bluegrass by The Avett Brothers, Grammy Award-winning Vampire Weekend, moombahton sensation Dillon Francis and electro-synthpoper Calvin Harris.

It may no longer be the alternative or underground event Farrell began in the nineties, but Lollapalooza is unquestionably “something very big; something wondrous*”. After more than a decade at Grant Park in Chicago, delivering an eclectic array of musical genres, it’s now being promoted as a ‘destination’ festival. Its BIGness continues to increase thanks to the South American editions that have captivated a young vibrant crowd of Latin-American festival-goers in Chile, Argentina and Brazil.
Lollapalooza Chile, at Parque O’Higgins, has hosted international headliners such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arcade Fire, Phoenix, Pixies, Kid Cudi, The Bloody Beetroots, Jake Bugg, Vampire Weekend, Imagine Dragons and even the legendary Lollapalooza originals: Nine Inch Nails. But the line-up isn’t all imported. Chilean Alejandro Vivanco, rock sensation Prefiero Fernandez, Chilean-American Francisca Valenzuela, French-Chilean Ana Tijoux & renowned Chilean singer/songwriter Joe Vasconcellos have also taken the Lolla stage and made it their own.
Lollapalooza Buenos Aires, at the Hípodromo San Isidro, has likewise seen the Lollapalooza touring favourites such as Arcade Fire, Red Hot Chili Peppers, SoundGarden, Ellie Goulding, Johnny Marr, Nine Inch Nails, Phoenix, Kid Cudi, Pixies and Vampire Weekend. In addition to the celebrated headliners, the Argentinean edition has included Buenos Aires own Juana Molina, Onda Vaga & the rock fiesta gurus: La Armada Cósmica.
Lollapalooza São Paulo, at autódromo de Interlagos, has also been a resounding success featuring international line-ups that included Muse, Arcade Fire, Cage The Elephant, Wolfgang Gartner, Savages, Kid Cudi & The Bloody Beetroots. It’s also delivered Brazilian fans with a taste of their own rocking greats such as Nação Zumbi & Brothers of Brazil, plus the indie alternative rock group Apanhador Só, as well as Latin-American favourites from Argentina such as Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas & Mexican Latin Grammy Award-winners Café Tacvba.
