Getting to GlastonburyYou know it must be good when thousands of festival-goers head for a teeny dot that’s barely visible on a map. So, where is Glastonbury Festival actually held? The short answer is: Pilton. But it’s more accurate to say that it all unfolds on the green fields of Worthy Farm near the small town of Shepton Mallet between the teeny villages of Pilton and Pylle in Somerset county, South West England. Glastonbury itself is a teeny town 10 km from the festival site and Castle Cary is 13 km from Shepton Mallet where you’ll find the bus and train stations. Glastonbury Festival bridges the musical generation & genre gap by serving up a feast of contradictions, from the British pop-indie-post-punk of The Vaccines to the lyrical sagas of American country music hall of famer Kenny Rogers. It may be as English as its green fields, but the stages are as multicultural as the genre-bending rumba-madiaba-folk-pop musician Jupiter Bokondji and his band Okwess International (originally from the Congo), and Mali-born ngoni master (traditional lute player) Bassekou Kouyate.
Each year Glastonbury Music Festival finds a way of topping itself with first time headline acts that began in the 1970s with T. Rex, followed by David Bowie Peter Gabriel, Van Morrison, The Cure, Joe Cocker, R.E.M., Moby, The Who, Paul McCartney and continued the WOW-factor tradition with Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Primal Scream, and finally The Rolling Stones – with Mick Jagger singing Glastonbury Girl from the Pyramid Stage! But the festival line-up also tops itself under the Big Top with eye-popping presentations of acrobatics & circus feats such as the Incandescence Night Circus and the blazing interpretations of folk tales by Australian fire performers, Will-o’-the-Wisp. How can Glastonbury continue to top itself? Festival founder, Michael Eavis, assures fans he’s up to the challenge and won’t “give up trying to make the next one better”.
Aside from the booming beats on the main stages and the alluring stunts in the theatre and circus venues, the worthiness of Worthy Farm is open to discovery. Saunter over to the more secret areas like the Glasto Latino and partake of salsa dance classes and wiggle your merengue-loving hips to Latin rhythms with groups such as Alma de Cuba y Los Guanches, or sit back and watch a film at the Pilton Palais or voice your opinions in a debate at the Speakers Forum.

Numerous camping areas are well marked throughout the fields, some at the heart of the action near the Pyramid Stage, and others in quiet spots on the fringes of the festival grounds. Choose from:

Pre-erected Tents at Worthy ViewIf you don’t want to haul gear to and from the festival, or are coming from abroad, there’s an option of hiring a pre-erected tent at Worthy View. All the tents are ready to move into. Just unzip and unpack! Worthy View is situated off-site, but not far the main area, just 250m from Pennard Hill Gate, above Stone Circle field. One of the perks is a panoramic view of the festival grounds below. Tipis in the Tipi FieldOne of the most unique experiences at Glastonbury is hiring a tipi in the Tipi Field.
