Full Frame Film Festival has screened top contemporary documentary films since its founding in 1998. Programming includes new full-length and short documentaries competing for awards, student submissions, and curated film series that explore social themes & pay respect to notable filmmakers. Speakeasy Conversations, sponsored by A&E Indie Films, unite indie film leaders in a casual setting to discuss processes and politics of non-fiction cinematography. Screenings run morning till midnight at theaters in the downtown core, centred around Carolina Theatre, the adjacent Convention Center and the Arts Council. Friday & Saturday nights feature free outdoor shows in the city’ central park.
Tribute, an annual highlight, pays homage to a prominent filmmaker each year via screenings of notable works + awards. Past Tribute recipients include producer Albert Maysles, lifetime Oscar-recipient and direct cinema pioneer DA Pennebaker, Academy Award-winner Charles Guggenheim, Oscar-winner Marcel Ophüls (The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie), historical document producers Ken & Ric Burns, autobiographical documentarian Ross McElwee, African-American socio-cultural producer St. Clair Bourne, and Academy Award-winning short docs director Jessica Yu.
