Fuji Rock isn’t on Mt Fuji. The name stuck after its 1997 debut near Mount Fuji, but since 1999, Japan’s largest music festival has rocked the eastern slope of Mount Takenoko at the Naeba Ski Resort (operated by Prince Hotel) only about an hour and a half from Tokyo, near the hot spring town of Yuzawa in Niigata prefecture. The 3-day festival attracts more than 100,000 fans, not only to camp on the sloping Naeba golf course in a woodland-mountain setting, but because organizers, Smash Japan, consistently deliver headliners like Arcade Fire, The Bloody Beetroots, Nine Inch Nails, Arctic Monkeys, The Chemical Brothers + top DJs, in genres from alternative to jazz and world beats.
With more than a dozen stages there are plenty of places for concerts, clubbing & chilling. The main area is Green Stage with high-tech screens, then White Stage in a forest clearing, and Red Marquee with DJs & dancing. Field of Heaven is a wooded chill space, the Palace of Wonder is a group of bar-lounges around a giant purple dance floor, Gypsy Avalon is intimate & alternative, Orange Court has jazz & world rhythms, and Café de Paris is a quirky cabaret. But the funkiest spots are the two high mountain stages called Day Dreaming & Silent Breeze, only accessible by taking a 15 minute Dragondola ride, an aerial lift, one of the longest gondolas in the world, from Naeba to Kagura.

The mountain and forest environment is a grand backdrop, but it’s the world-class international Fuji Rock line up that draws over a hundred thousand fans annually. In recent years, headliners featured as part of the Fuji Rock lineup have included Franz Ferdinand, Arcade Fire, Jack Jackson, Basement Jaxx, Biffy Clyro, Claude Vonstroke, The Bloody Beetroots, Nine Inch Nails, Bjork, The Cure, Skrillex, My Bloody Valentine, The Stone Roses, Beady Eye, Boom Boom Satellites, Radiohead, Elvis Costello and The Imposters, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Manu Chao, Kaiser Chiefs, The Vaccines, The Chemical Brothers, Mogwai and lots of Japanese bands and electronic dance music producers. Over a dozen stages, and special areas, feature the many acts and performances spread over the three days. The areas and stages include:
The main gargantuan outdoor stage, the backdrop for the biggest headliners, equipped with giant screens for state-of-the-art productions, and good viewing access for 40,000 fans.
The second largest outdoor stage, situated in a forest clearing, with space for 15,000 fans of multi-genre artists.
An indoor stage, situated near Oasis, with space for 5,000 fans of live bands and dance music DJ sets. The Red Marquee offers daytime performances and nightly dancing.
A more intimate outdoor stage, with a vibe conducive to chilling. In the evening, the magical woodland ambiance is enhanced with candlelight.
An area that includes several stages, such as Rookie a Go-Go for up-and-coming acts, a funky art deco Spiegeltent (also called the Crystal Palace Tent) with funky bars (like Black Velvet) and stages that surround a purple dance floor. Live bands, as well as hot Japanese and international DJs are featured throughout the various zones that make up the Palace of Wonders.
One of the most intimate and cosy atmospheres with a stage that features alternative music for 1,000 fans who just want to chill.
A medium-sized outdoor stage, for about 5,000 fans, that specializes in jazz and world music performances that go late into the night.
A space, which during the day is part of the Oasis eating and lounging area, and at night is converted into a stage that delivers surprise bands and serves sake to a small group of friendly fans.
These two stages are the most unique features of Fuji Rock. To get to the Silent Breeze and Day Dreaming stages, festival-goers must ride one of the world’s longest gondolas, the Dragondola, which takes about 15-20 minutes, to get to the top of a mountain in the adjacent Kagura ski area. There are performances and shows on both stages, plus lots of high mountain dancing.

This isn’t technically a stage, but the official tour bus campground. But there’s a stage in this area, exclusive to VIP campers, where live performances are presented in a relaxed camping ambiance.
It may seem strange at a ski resort area on a mountain in Japan, but this is a French-style cabaret with chanson, gypsy shows and a Parisian-style bar with wine and cocktails.
This a small stage near Café de Paris featuring casual performances in mixed genres.

Naeba Ski Resort weather is quite changeable even in July. There may be extreme highs and lows with little warning. Even if the days are hot and sunny, nights are usually quite fresh. The region is also prone to rain in summer months, but do not pack umbrellas, they are forbidden on-site. Take non-slip trekking shoes (the slopes can be very slippery), a waterproof parka + hiking-style raincoat, and anti-inflammatory lotion because bees, wasps and ticks are known to proliferate. Fuji Rock organizers suggest packing snug-fitting clothes to cover every bit of skin when hiking or walking in wooded areas, and forgoing perfume and scented lotions because some fragrances attract insects. |
