Festival d’Avignon: In & OffFestival d’Avignon is a three-week theatrical festival with music, dance, cinema, literature, workshops, discussions, gala performances and free street events; the oldest arts festival in France that began in 1947 when Jean Vilar was asked to present his adaptation of T.S. Eliot’s “Murder in the Cathedral” at the Popes’ Palace. Although Vilar didn’t deliver a cathedral murder, but other theatrical adaptations, it set the stage for today’s ‘In’ shows which are still held at the Cour d’Honneur du Palais des Papes (and 20 other venues). While official productions include world-class plays, it’s the fringe performances, known as Avingnon Off, that engage attendees with a thousand free shows at a hundred sites throughout historic Avignon France. |

Festival d’Avignon is the oldest French arts festival still in existence, founded in 1947, today one of the most important theatrical events in the world, attracting more than 130,000 to a spectacle of theatre, music, dance, film, literature, workshops, discussions, debates, gala performances, nightly premiers, and free street events.
Avignon, with its historic architecture, ancient city walls, 12th century cathedral and medieval Saint-Bénézet Bridge over the Rhône (peppered with chic cafes, bars & restaurants), is more than a charming backdrop for a French festival. Famous monuments are converted into venues, and extravaganzas are held at the Cour d’Honneur du Palais des Papes (the 14th century gothic-medieval Popes’ Palace) + 20 others (like the Opéra Grand Avignon), hosting around 40 ‘In’ shows and world premier plays.
The entire city becomes a gigantic stage for performances thanks to the independent Avignon Off events, separate from the official Avignon Festival (and without artistic direction), but with their own programme by Avignon Festival et Compagnies Le OFF. These ‘Off’ events bring the city to life with over 1,000 local and international companies entertaining audiences with drama, music, dance, puppetry and circus acts along streets, in squares and more than a hundred venues. Avignon becomes a giant stage, an auditorium and an arts forum during 3 weeks in July.
Festival d’Avignon has world-class theatre in a gothic papal palace in France!
One of the main features of this legendary festival is its location, the courtyard of the Pope’s Palace, Cour d’honneur, one of the most significant examples of European medieval Gothic architecture (and a UNESCO World Heritage Site), where open-air performances are delivered to almost 2,000 attendees.
The other main feature is, of course, the shows, which include nearly 40 distinct events such as plays, dance recitals, visual arts, exhibits, readings, film screenings, debates, and the annual Pièce de résistance, a worldwide première.
