EXIT Festival: From Protest to Party

EXIT is freedom of expression in action; a 4-day celebration of liberty with rock, punk, metal, hip-hop, rap and electronic dance music booming off 4 stages. It has won Best Major European Festival & Best Summer Festival awards, not a surprise to a quarter million fans who have flocked to it each year since 2000, witnessing global headliners like Billy Idol, Duran Duran, Massive Attack, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, The Prodigy, Pet Shop Boys, Primal Scream, Cypress Hill, Franz Ferdinand, Groove Armada, David Guetta, Pete Tong, Booka Shade, Claude VonStroke, Kraftwerk, Loco Dice, Skrillex, Boys Noize and Damon Albarn + a long list of stars who have performed live at the ancient Petrovaradin Fortress overlooking the Danube in Novi Sad Serbia.

About

EXIT Festival: From Protest to Party

It began as a 100-day anti-Milošević protest by university students in the summer of 2000, with a theme ‘Exit out of ten years of madness’ (where local bands performed on outdoor stages on the grounds of the University of Novi Sad – an event tied to the Otpor! movement), ending a few days before the September 24th presidential election (and the overthrow of the government just days later on October 5th when Slobodan Milošević was replaced by Vojislav Koštunica). With newfound liberty, the second Exit Festival was no longer a political protest, but a 9-day summer festival at a historic fortress on the banks of the Danube river with a quarter million giddy bodies and happy voices engaging in the freedom to make noise. Such enthusiasm attracted international attention and over the years brought renowned headliners, media and awards, culminating in being named Best Major European Festival at the European Festival Awards in 2014. Exit is still held in July at the 17th century Petrovaradin Fortress, now with 4 stages (Main, Dance Arena, Fusion & Explosive) overlooking the city of Novi Sad in Vojvodina province Serbia.

EXIT Adventure

Although EXIT Nova Sad has gone from 9 days to 4, the penchant for long celebrations continues with EXIT Adventure – a dual event including the 4 days of partying & concerts at the fortress plus a 3-day Adriatic beach bash at Sea Dance Festival on Jaz Beach near Budva in Montenegro.

EXIT was a protest that became the Best Major European Festival in Serbia!
