Cruïlla Barcelona: Musical CrossingCruïlla means ‘crossing’, and that’s exactly what this cross-genre musical bash is all about, a voyage of mixed sounds spread over 3 days with stars like Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Imelda May with rockabilly-blues-jazz, Cypress Hill’s latino-hip-hop, Calle 13 with Puerto Rican rhythms and alternative Spanish rock sensations Vetusta Morla. Other headliners have included brass-rich Balkan composer Goran Bregovic, lo-fi-blues-folk-sadcore Cat Power, rapper Snoop Dogg, Brit-pop Suede, trip-hop Morcheeba, folk-punk by Billy Bragg and Catalonia’s own Joan Colomo, Pau Vallvé and Joan Dausà i Els Tipus d’Interès. It’s not Sónar innovation or edgy Primavera Sound, but it’s a fun intimate party for 30,000 revellers at Parc del Fórum in Barcelona Spain. |
||
Cruïlla is a crossing of global sonic vibes at a chic open-air venue facing the sea in Barcelona. Though it may be peppered with Latin, Spanish & Catalan performers, they’re more likely to be playing surf-rock’n’roll like Los Tiki Phantoms, alternative rock like Vetusta Morla, rap like Violadores del Verso, rumba-ska like La Pegatina, American-folk like that of Bigott, nomadic-fusion like that by Jairo Zavala (Depedro), pop-rock by Quimi Portet, or vintage 60s pop like that of The Pepper Pots - not anything traditional. It’s rock, punk, hip-hop, electro dance, pop and world beats; an eclectic sound party without labels.
With 30,000 revellers at Parc del Fòrum, the atmosphere is more intimate than Primavera Sound (at the same venue in the spring with 100,000 fans), and the music less avant-garde than Sónar (in June), with international headliners (since 2004) like: Iggy & The Stooges, M.I.A., Cypress Hill, 2ManyDJs, Billy Bragg, The Selecter, Suede, Snoop Dogg, Band of Horses, Jack Johnson, Macklemore, Imelda May, Angus & Julia Stone, The John Butler Trio, Damon Albarn, Zaz, James Morrison, Wyclef Jean, Cat Power, Birdy Nam Nam, Dub Incorporation, Linton Kwesi Johnson, ZAZ, WhoMadeWho, Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, as well as Malian Amadou & Mariam, Brazilian Edgar Scandurra, Puerto Rican rap by Calle 13, Balkan brass by Goran Bregovic & gypsy-pink with Gogol Bordello.
Cruïlla is a musical crossing where sounds meet partiers by the sea in Barcelona!
It’s not an event for industry pros like Sonar, and it’s not a gargantuan affair like Primavera Sound, but it’s an excellent party with fabulous music in a city by the sea with sangria, sand & sun.
The incredibly eclectic international line-ups, which range from well-known DJs spinning electronic dance beats to renowned rock bands from around the world, as well as unusual genre-blending world rhythms by groups from Africa, Jamaica, Brazil and across Latin America and Europe, plus amazing Catalan groups and progressive Spanish bands, makes Cruilla a festival that can’t easily be labelled.
The festival goes all night – until 5am!
Barcelona city is one of the world’s greatest party captals as well as one of the most amazing spots in Europe to lounge in the sun by the sea. Bring a bikini and some tanning oil (with sunscreen) since Cruilla concerts don’t start till the evening.

Season & WeatherSeason: Summer
Temperature: 20 to 28 °C
Barcelona summer weather is consistently pleasant. The region benefits from a moderate climate with long sun-drenched days, agreeably fresh evenings, and sometimes chilly nights with Mediterranean sea breezes. Think sexy and slinky but also bring a jacket for cool evenings. Cruilla concerts don’t start until about 6.30pm and continue till about 5am, which means most of the time you’ll be outdoors in the evening or night air. |
