Chilfest: 80s Rock and Today’s PopChilfest is new to the summer festival scene; a 2-day Universal Event Production that launched in 2013 with an 80s pop-rock bang of a line-up including Tony Hadley, “Never Gonna Give You Up” Rick Astley, “Unshakeable” Howard Jones, and T’Pau’s Carol Decker as well as contemporary hip-hop-pop with Little Mix & Loveable Rogues for 11,000 fans of all ages. Retaining its 80s theme for a second year, the festival headlined the Boomtown Rats, China Crisis, “Spirit in the Sky” Dr & The Medics, Boney M, Jason Donovan, and again bridged the generation gap with contemporary acts like Bad Manners, Amelia Lily, Stooshe and the 5th Story boys. Chilfest is a fun mix of yesterday’s rock & today’s pop at Pendley Meadow near Tring in Hertfordshire England. |

The UK’s newest pop & 80s music festival at Pendley Meadow in Hertfordshire (about an hour from London) didn’t mean to be so good or become so popular (that it would have to limit crowds to 7,000/day), and it didn’t imagine being nominated for Best New Festival & Best Family Festival at the UK Festival Awards because, technically, it wasn’t a ‘festival’. It began in 2013 as a way for Universal Event Productions (a live event service group) to celebrate their 15th anniversary and show-off their state-of-the-art sustainable lighting, audiovisual & staging systems to clients. But they did such as good job that it’s now on the British music festival circuit for a second year!
Although known as the Chilfest 80s Music Festival, it’s not just for 80s music-lovers. It’s divided into retro & contemporary concerts “with two nights of classic eighties and a blast of modern pop on the Sunday…,” says Steve Butcher, Chilfest organizer & UEP managing director. Which explains why Chilfest tickets are sold as 2-day passes for Friday & Saturday (with 80s bands such as The Boomtown Rats, China Crisis, Heaven 17, Doctor & The Medics + stars like Jason Donovan and Boney M.) and a Sunday ticket for pop concerts (with Amelia Lily, Union J, 5th Story, 911 and Rough Copy.) Although there’s no on-site camping, count on high-tech stages, excellent sound, and a funky LED lighting system.
Chilfest is 80s rock & contemporary pop at Pendley Meadow in Hertfordshire!
Chilfest was started by Steve Butcher who loves 80s music and is also the director of Universal Event Productions.
The first Chilfest (July 2013) was created as a one-time charity event.
After selling out, and later being nominated at the UK Festival Awards, it continued by popular demand.
Since then, each July has seen Pendley Meadow filled to capacity for two nights of spectacular retro performances by artists like Billy Ocean, The Blow Monkeys, Sister Sledge, Shalamar, Shakatak and Sonia (known for her starring role as Sandy in London’s West End Theatre production of Grease).
Chilfest offers performance interpreting tp make it a deaf-friendly event.
Performance interpreters convert sounds & language into passionate expressions that stimulate the senses and generate a dynamic experience for hearing impaired guests.
