Chicago Blues Festival: Stars & GuitarsChicago Blues Festival is 3 days of “Chicago blues” with classic stars & electric guitars + big band brass, saxophones, harmonicas & violins on 5 stages, which began in 1984 as an ode to Muddy Waters, later payed homage to greats like T-bone Walker, Big Bill Broonzy, Bessie Smith & Skip James, and over the years headlined B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Little Milton, John Lee Hooker, The Neville Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy. Today, it resonates with tempos from classic blues by Eddy Clearwater to electric-R&B by Shemekia Copeland, zydeco-Afro-Brazilian-soul-blues by Peaches Statenfor, and hard-rock-blues by Lil’ Ed, for half a millions fans aged 8 to 80 at the world’s biggest FREE blues celebration at Grant Park in downtown Chicago. |

Chicago Blues Fest draws half a million fans each year to this outdoor concert in the park, which boasts being not only the biggest free show of its kind, but finds itself in the ‘blues capital of the world’. Chi-City has been a hub for blues music since The Great Migration from the South, when musicians would head there for a better chance at being heard, and in keeping with that spirit, organisers: the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events, allows submissions from any blues act within the area.
Though this is a "blues" affair, there’s also room for some musical colour variations, with soul blues, blues-rock and quite a few jazz-blues tones. The Prerillo Music Shell stage delivers some hues of soul blended with R&B, while the Windy City Blues Society “Street Stage” and the Pepsi Front Porch Stage highlights home-grown true-blue Chicago blues-blues mixing it all up with some big name global classic rock guitar blues bands.
Chicago sets the stage for old favourites and up-and-coming blues musicians, with past acts like B.B. King, Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitt, Bo Diddley and Koko Taylor taking the stage in previous years. New blood mixes with old in the Blues Kids tent, where talented old souls take the stage and the money they raise goes back into blues education to keep the art alive.
Chicago Blues Festival is legendary stars and amateur starts in "Sweet Home Chicago"!

Season & WeatherSeason: Summer
Temperature: 17 to 29 °C
Chicago weather in July is hot, sunny, and... did I say... hot. It’s the city’s hottest month of the year with almost 12 hours of sunshine a day! There’s also a fairly decent chance of some rain, but umbrellas are not a good thing to take due to the crowds. Remember that about a million blues fans descend upon Grant Park over a 3-day weekend, so keep what you take with you down to the essentials. Hats, mats, blankets to sit on, sunscreen, a refillable water-bottle and comfy walking shoes because Grant Park is huge - about 319 acres in the heart of Chicago! |
