A Curious Thing about Getting to Cheyenne

Believe it or not, there’s no train to Cheyenne!

Despite Cheyenne having a gorgeous Union Pacific Depot - a historic railway station and train line that still connects to Denver (and incidentally the town has the world’s largest steam locomotive on display), and being famous as one of the US railway capitals, having come into existence almost entirely due to the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad, today the city of Cheyenne has no railway system and no Amtrak service!

Flights to Cheyenne

Yes, there’s a small regional airport in Cheyenne with daily Beechcraft (and charter flights) by Great Lakes Airlines, but since it’s only a 1.5 hr drive from Denver to Cheyenne, flying isn’t the most popular, or the cheapest, transportation option.

CFD Park-n-Ride Shuttle

Frontier Days Park-n-Ride Shuttle pick-up & drop-off points include:

  • ‘Bull Park-n-Ride’ at I-25 & Happy Jack
  • ‘Bronc Park-n-Ride’ at Missile Drive & 24th Street
  • Cheyenne Frontier Days Park

Cheyenne Frontier Days Train

  • There’s the Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days Train.
  • It’s a historic party-train specifically set into motion for Frontier Days.
  • Sadly, it only accommodates a few VIPs and lucky lottery-winning passengers.

CFD Train Lottery

Travellers who wish to ride the legendary Union Pacific train from Denver to Cheyenne, must request tickets months in advance. Since there are such few seats, it’s left up to a lottery to decide who gets tickets.

  • To put your name in the hat, sign up for the online CFD Train Lottery.
  • If you win, you can catch the Union Pacific train from a stop near Denver Coliseum.

Driving to Frontier Days Cheyenne

  • It takes about an hour and a half to drive.
  • Interstate 25 is the main highway from Denver Co to Cheyenne WY.
  • From the Denver Airport, take E-470 north to I-25.
  • Exit on I-25 and continue north to Cheyenne.

Frontier Days: Daddy of ‘em All

Cheyenne Frontier Days is 10 days of bull riding, steer wrestling, bronco busting, calf roping & bareback riding at one of the largest rodeos in North America – a show that began in 1897 and is still the “Daddy of ‘em All”. Events kick-off with a parade, pancake breakfasts and the daily CFD rodeo where bronc & pro bull riders compete in the PRCA & CBR World Championship. CFD is wild partying, dancing, drinking and live concerts at the Buckin’A Saloon + rides and games at the carnival midway, and stepping back in time at the Old Frontier Town, Indian Village and Old West Museum. Frontier Nights feature country-rock-pop-blues headliners like John Mellencamp, Kid Rock & Lady Antebellum who perform at the Frontier Days Park in Cheyenne Wyoming.

About

Frontier Days: Daddy of ‘em All

It’s the ‘The Daddy of ‘em All’ - the ten-day Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo that features the PRCA rodeo championships + bull riding competitions with the world’s top pro bareback bronc and bull riding stars vying for huge prizes, attracting 200,000 fans. But it’s not all CFD Rodeo rowdiness and bucking broncos at the Cheyenne Frontier Days arena, it’s also ten rip-roarin’ Frontier Nights with concerts by country-rockers like John Mellencamp, Dwight Yoakam, Florida Georgia Line, Kid Rock, Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw, the Charlie Daniels Band, Lady Antellum and even hard rock and metal bands like Mötley Crüe & Kiss.

Parades, Pancakes & Carnival Americana

Cheyenne Frontier Days parade gallops through town (think cowboys with fringed chaps, carriages, vintage floats, train memorabilia, tractors & marching bands), while the USAF Thunderbirds fly overhead, and everyone gets stuffed with free Kiwanis pancakes, then wild-west partying kicks-up its spurs with live bands, cold beer & country dancing inside the Buckin’A Saloon at the Frontier Park fairgrounds. Carnival Americana spins thrill-seekers on dizzying rides, amuses with sideshows and tempts tummies with meaty-eats and sticky-treats. And… there’s an Indian Village with shows by the Little Sun Drum and Dance Group, Frontier Town with Buffalo Bill and Wyatt Earp, and the Old West Museum with western art and the history of one of the world’s most extreme sports.

Frontier Days is ‘The Daddy’ of rodeos and a wild west carnival in Cheyenne!
