Since 2008, Camp Bestival has entertained 30,000 kids & adults with guests such as Chuck Berry, Florence + the Machine, Lee “Scratch” Perry, The Cuban Brothers, Primal Scream, Kool and the Gang, and Kid Creole at the lush green grounds around Lulworth Castle in Dorset England.

About

Camp Bestival: Family Festi-Holiday

Camp Bestival is the summer-camp, family-friendly version of its big sister Bestival on the Isle of Wight, but with tons more stuff revolving around small people. It’s a fun-filled festi-holiday (awarded Best Family Festival for 3 years) with over a dozen ways to camp (imagine reserved plots, painted tipis, luxury yurts, cosy squrts, bowtop wagons, and a bell tent hotel) at the 17th-century Lulworth Castle near Lulworth Cove on the Jurassic coastline in Dorset England (a natural World Heritage Site).

Music, Comedy, Theatre, Circus, Food & Funky Bars

Camp Bestival festival is about comedy (think Pajama Men, George Egg & Comedy Club 4 Kids), theatre & circus (picture Hugless Douglas, Horrible Histories, Funk da Cirque, and the Rajasthan Kawa Circus), shows & activities at places like Castle Stage, The Big Top, The Bollywood Tent, Dingy Dell, Art Town & TeenArena, and live music for adults (sounds by Sinead O’Connor, Basement Jaxx, De la Soul and DJ sets by Radio 1’s Rob da Bank and friends). Plus… wordplay at The Satin Lizard Lounge with Scroobius Pip, Tongue Fu in the Guardian Literary Institute, hanging out at Jose da Bank’s Jam Jar Bar - a boutique liquor lounge in a vintage Roma Caravan, chillin’ at Peacock Pavilion in The Soul Park, sampling Indian street food at The Feast Collective or relaxing with a glass of Mediterranean fleshy reds at a Moroccan speakeasy: the Knackered Mothers Wine Club.

Camp Bestival is a magical family holiday at a castle by the sea in Dorset England!

10 Features of Camp Bestival Lulworth Castle

It’s simply one of the quirkiest UK music festivals the summer has to offer! It’s one of the most diverse, action-packed, summer-camp-style family festivals in the UK with a bit of everything for everyone – from extreme sports for teens to sandy play areas for infants - situated in a gorgeous lush park by a huge castle in East Lulworth near one of the scariest and most astonishing coastlines in England. But there’s more.

1. Dance Music & DJ Sets

Just to keep parents out of their kids hair, DJ line-ups have included:

  • Boy George and Mark Vedo
  • Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs
  • DJ Yoda
  • David Rodigan’s Ram Jam Bass
  • DJ Dapper Dan’s reggae, roots and dub
  • BBC Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank and tons of his friends

2. Live Music & Quirky Bands

The Camp Bestival line up is also about fabulous & quirky live music with stars like:

  • Pop Will Eat Itself (PWEI)
  • Beans on Toast - folk legend
  • Jaipur Brass Band - gypsy & Bollywood pop
  • Rory McLeod - ex-circus-clown-fire-eater-turned-storyteller-musician

3. Camp Bestival Kids Events

The main features of Camp Bestival Festival are the oodles of kids events…for real kids and those who refuse to grow up… like:

  • Horrible Histories - “… of Britain with the nasty bits left in!”
  • Medieval Jousting by The Knights of Middle England – Yes it’s a show with professional stuntmen acting as Knights, jousting on speeding horses, galloping towards opponents in a medieval jousting arena.
  • Freesports Park – extreme sports, BMX-ing, skateboarding + pro sessions.
  • Insect Circus – “wasps, ants, flies, beetles and friends” present insect acrobats, aerialists, jugglers, tight rope walkers and a dancing snail and other creepy crawlies.

4. From Baby Yoga to West End Kids

Camp Bestival is one of the most family friendly festivals on the planet with something for every age including events like Baby Yoga, places such as Soft Play for infants under 5, Comedy Club 4 Kids attracting those 6 and up, and tons of teen and youth focused activities like Funk Da Cirque street dancers and shows by the elite West End Kids song and dance troupe.

5. Solving the Problem with Family Music Festivals via a Silent Disco

Adults and teens seldom agree on music, but somehow the Camp Bestival line up has solved this issue by delivering everything from a Rob da Bank Prince Tribute to Awesome Tapes from Africa, DJ KRU, and when all else fails…a Silent Disco!

6. Camp Bestival Lulworth Family Activities

There are tents and shows and family activities at The Greatest Tent on Earth, Oberon’s Observatory, and The Castle stage as well as at The Big Top, The Bollywood Tent, the Freesports Park and The Science Tent. Family members can join dance and circus workshops, participate in the Fancy Dress Parade, and go as a family to the Dressing Up Box and outfitted in costumes, get airbrush tattoos and face painting, then go to the Camp Bestival Catwalk and show-off. It’s not rated as one of the best family festivals in the UK for nothing, and it’s not all about games, showing off, watching shows or being entertained, for example…

7. Camp Bestival Project Wild Thing

Lulworth Castle Dorset is situated on one of the UK’s most outstanding natural wonders, the Dorset coast which is a natural heritage site near Lulworth Cove and the cliffs that drop into the sea as well as a lush region -  ideal to explore and learn about science and nature. Which is why Camp Bestival has teamed up with Project Wild Thing “a people-powered movement to help children and adults reconnect with nature” via nature-focused activities, workshops, gatherings and talks to learn about identifying plants & animals, how to build shelters, spot birds, practice tree climbing, enjoy falconry and be inspired by wildlife experts to want to explore the great outdoors.

8. Camp Bestival Dorset Science with Real Scientists

Sure the Science Tent has Silly Science to watch, but it also has programs and fun family activities that are “experi-mental”, like Slime workshops to study polymers, interactive talks about how humans might survive in space, engineering workshops to show how to make fruit-powered electrical devices, and quirky sciency stuff about chemistry & bubbles.

9. Spinney Hollow Workshops at Lulworth Castle

The Lulworth Castle Dorset building has a history dating back to 1610, with a notable legacy of having been an in-exile abode for some of the surviving members of the French royal family after the French Revolution. It also comes with a dramatic tale of a tremendous fire that gutted the edifice…and of course being left abandoned for years until its rather recent restoration….. So it’s appropriate that one of the most popular British festivals should have activities and workshops inspired by royalty, castle life, knights and wizards, and about making swords and carving magic wands and telling folk tales around a fire. At Camp Bestival it’s called Spinney Hollow, and it’s a place to learn how to use traditional green wood working tools (naturally to carve magic wands) and to  apprentice at the medieval craft workshops (there are over a hundred of them) and naturally get together and discuss dragon tales.

10. Family… but with a touch of Adult

So, it’s one of the best FAMILY festivals for kids, babies, infants, teens and everyone under 18, but what about grown-ups? There’s some pretty nutty stuff for adults, like Caravanserai - a village built out of objects d’art …apparently by “French artists, gypsies, beatniks and performers” that offer up a more risqué Le Cirque, plus French Champagne amidst vintage beats. And let’s face it – the Knackered Mother’s Wine Club is for adults, and so is Josie da Bank’s Jam Jar Bar. But…the best bit for adults at Camp Bestival is … what all summer festivals should have: an adult-friendly Camp Spa with massage, facials, aromatherapy foot soaking, and a wood fired yurt sauna.

Two UK Festivals by Rob da Bank

  • Bestival

Bestival is held on the Isle of Wight later in the year, around September, and although it’s also a family friendly festival with no age restrictions, it’s not dedicated to kids. It has a similar quirky, fun-loving friendly spirit but with a more adult twist with a Bollywood Cocktail Bar, a Wishing Tree Stage and a fancy dress event (all dedicated to peace, love and dancing) plus loads of boutique camping options.

  • Camp Bestival

This is the spin-off event geared toward kids. It takes place in July/August in Dorset, in South West England, at the famous Lulworth Castle situated between Weymouth (on the sea), Wareham (a town where one of the nearest train stations is located), Wool (a village that also has a nearby railway station), Bournemouth (the nearest city with an airport) and Dorchester (a town about 25 km from Lulworth Castle).
