There’s a Free Camel Cup shuttle service provided by the Northern Territory Government.
The shuttle runs to/from Blatherskite Park and:

  • Blatherskite Park is 6 km from Alice Springs Greyhound bus terminal on Gap Road.

Ghan Train to Alice Springs

  • Blatherskite Park is 6 km from Alice Springs Railway Station on George Crescent.
  • Alice Springs is served by the Adelaide-Darwin Transcontinental Line called The Ghan Train.
  • The Ghan has the look and feel of the old Oriental Express.
  • It’s a historic line operated by Great Southern Railway
  • Trains only run twice a week.

Middle of Nowhere

  • Alice Springs is literally in the MIDDLE of nowhere.
  • It’s about 1,500 km from Adelaide and another 1,500 km from Darwin. And there’s not much in-between.
  • The journey by train takes over 13 hours.
  • Driving takes two days.

Camel Cup: Dromedary Mayhem

Lasseters Camel Cup is one of the quirkiest mayhem-filled experiences for intrepid dromedary riders and 5,000 spectators who venture out for a day at the races, camel races that is, with a parade in the morning & extreme competitions from noon till 4pm, including a madcap Honeymoon Race & serious sports events such as rickshaw contests, Mr. & Mrs. Camel Cup challenges, belly dancing and of course yummy eats & drinks dusted in an outback carnival atmosphere. Camel Cup has tested brave riders and entertained camel-lovers since 1970 on the dry Todd River, and now, on the 2nd Saturday of each July, humpy mammals kick up dust on a race track in the central desert region at Blatherskite Park near Alice Springs in Australia’s Northern Territory.

Camel Cup: Dromedary Mayhem

On the 2nd Saturday in July, one of the planet’s most remote towns (in the heart of Australia’s Red Centre, surrounded by desert, situated near a dried-up riverbed, also known as the capital of madcap and downright silly outback events including a water-free bottomless boat regatta), yet again outdoes itself by celebrating one of the zaniest and most hilariously quirky sporting events in the world, with cantankerously lovable participants: camels and very patient, but crazy, jockeys.

Mr & Miss Camel Cup, Honeymooners, Kamel Dapers & Rickshaws

Lasseters Camel Cup, a fundraiser by APEX and Lions Clubs of Central Australia (and Neil & Jane Waters at Camels Australia who engage in camel catching, training and saddle making), has gained international fame, attracting over 5,000 annual participants & spectators, featuring a camel parade + 9 wacky events from noon till 4pm such as the Honeymoon Race (where a jockey collects his bride while traversing the course), ‘normal’ camel vs. rider spectacles (where obstinate dromedaries might just as well have a sit down as run), Kids Kamel Dapers with wooden hobby camels, a Mr & Miss Camel Cup challenge, plus rickshaw races where ‘pullers’ trade places with ‘riders’ halfway through. Amidst the human-dromedary mayhem are belly dancing acts and local snacks and drinks at food stalls and bars in the carnivalesque ambiance of Blatherskite Park near Alice Springs Australia.

Camel Cup History

It was 1970 when Lions Club member Noel Fullerton, unable to resolve a pub dispute with another Lion, published a challenge in the local paper saying, “I have had a feud with Lion Keith Mooney–Smith…So I challenge him to a duel, weapons being camels,” and with that, the first Alice Springs Camel Race was held at the dried up Todd riverbed. Although now retired from racing, Noel’s thirty year career as a Camel Man, has brought him fame as the producer of Australia’s fastest record-holding camels, and is today considered the grandfather of the Australian camel industry, and of course…the founder of one of the most hilariously quirky races in the world.
