Calgary Stampede: Cowboys ‘n CowtownThe Calgary Stampede is one of the greatest cowboy shows and wild-west parties on the planet, with a history dating back to 1899, and today a larger-than-life ten-day whoop-up fest for over a million worldwide Cowtown fans. Events begin with a parade, then the vibe spreads through city streets via pancake breakfasts, barbeques and cowboy themed bashes at clubs and bars. The soul of Stampede is the daily rodeo (one of the largest in the world), nightly grandstand shows, a carnival, and live concerts by country-rock stars such as Garth Brooks and Shania Twain at the Saddledome + groups like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at Nashville North, and pop sensations like Anjulie on stages at the Stampede Park and fairgrounds in Calgary Alberta Canada. |

The Calgary Stampede is 10 days of western-style partying amidst bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, roping & riding rodeo cowboys with a backdrop of prairie cattlemen, breeders & ranchers. The Stampede Park and Saddledome (yes, it’s a stadium shaped like a saddle) as well as the fairgrounds with corral & grandstand (plus huge exposition halls), host agriculture exhibitions, breeding shows, livestock competitions, and one of the world’s largest rodeos touted as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth!
Kicking off events is the inaugural parade with mounted police (yes they’re on horseback), marching bands and horse-riding cowgirl beauties, then city-wide pancake breakfasts for flapjack & sausage lovers, followed by rodeo championships, extravagant grandstand shows, country-pop-rock concerts at the Saddledome with superstars like Reba McEntire & Shania Twain, plus free Coca-Cola Stage multi-genre performances by artists like Dean Brody, K-os, Big Wreck and Dragonette. It’s a rip-roaring wild cowboy shindig, that takes over an otherwise sane city and turns it into Cowtown (Calgary’s nickname), with flowing beer, juicy steaks, plaid shirts, boots with spurs, white cowboy hats and partying at Nashville North…oh, and family fun at the carnival midway with rides and a food fair including little cowboy snacks like rack of ribs and 2-foot-long sausages.
Calgary Stampede is a rodeo + concerts + carnival in a city on the Canadian prairie!
The Calgary Stampede is a singular event and here are 10 reasons why.
Despite its nickname “Cowtown”, Calgary is anything but a wild west outpost. It’s a vibrant, ultra-modern metropolis, one of the wealthiest cities in Canada, where many Canadian and international corporations (especially in the petroleum industry and supporting services) have HQs - which means its home to engineers, geologists and high paid executives, not just ranchers and cowboys. That said…
The region’s hard work plus good-natured let-loose and party-till-you-drop in a haystack ambiance is genuine! For many Alberta cattle ranchers, ranch hands and expert rodeo cowboys who participate in bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, tie down roping, saddle bronc & bareback riding (and even the crazy chuckwagon racers), the lifestyle is authentic. What may appear to be an invented wild west party, is in fact a way of life for many Alberta ranchers and their families, which is why some of the most popular Stampede events include young cowpokes displaying their accomplishments in the 4H Club Parade & the 4H youth rodeo, as well as big-time beef experts participating in The Cattle Trail - an interactive program regarding the Alberta beef industry, plus a horse breeders show, a sheep sheering competition, workhorse & tractor pull contests, a livestock auctioneer championship, and an international agriculture idea-sharing forum for cattlemen, breeders, ranchers and agricultural economists.
The Stampede grounds hosts ten-day of some of the world’s best agriculture shows & livestock competitions such as:
The Calgary Stampede Rodeo is promoted as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” & the “world’s richest tournament-style rodeo”, giving over $2 million a year in prize money.
There are local cowboys, star rodeo cowboys, cowboy wannabes, and international cowboy fans, but even if some are playing a temporary roll, many are the real deal. The ambiance at Stampede is genuine, with copious quantities of beer, thick beefsteaks, plaid shirts, red bandanas, glitzy belt buckles, boots with spurs, white cowboy hats, rip-roaring fun at country bars and… waking up early to steaming pots of coffee, grilled sausages and golden flapjacks at the free stampede pancake breakfasts around town. Street-side morning feasts run the entire course of the Calgary Stampede dates, although some start early, even before the inauguration of the festival with the Calgary Stampede Parade. (BTW, the stampede parade consists of cowboys and cowgirl beauty queens riding through town on horseback, a gala RCMP display and marching bands.)
During Stampede days, the morning air is filled with the aroma of pancakes, sausages, maple syrup and coffee, emanating from scores of makeshift open-air grills, but especially from the free stampede pancake breakfast at the Chinook Centre parking lot (since 1960 despite not being one of the official Stampede events). The Calgary Herald summed up the free feast (in an article published a few years ago) saying there was “1,800 kilograms of Spolumbo’s sausage, 6,000 litres of coffee and 1,500 kilograms of pancake batter served up to 60,000 hungry souls.”
Many Stampede events take place at the Scotiabank Saddledome, an unusual stadium designed to resemble a giant saddle, which hosts concerts by country music superstars like Paul Brandt, Country Music Hall of Fame Reba McEntire, Grand Ole Opry member Keith Urban and pop-country sensation Shania Twain.
Free concerts at the Coca-Cola Stage (included in the price of general admission to the Stampede Park) have featured multi-genre performances that range from country music singers Dean Brody, Corb Lund & Serena Ryder to the rap rock group Down with Webster, rapper K-os, rocker Sam Roberts, low-budget rock stars Walk Off The Earth, metal bands like Big Wreck, and even electronic pop sensations such as Anjulie, Dragonette and Hedley.
Calgary Stampede events are spread throughout the multi-venue festival grounds including one of the hottest Stampede Park venues called Nashville North. As its name suggests, it’s little slice of Nashville in Canada, featuring country, blues and folk artists with past performances by Beverley Mahood, Clayton Bellamy, The Kentucky Headhunters, Bill Anderson, Bobby Wills, Jake Mathews, Doc Walker, Dallas Smith and a long list of up-and-coming stars. And speaking of stars-to-be…
The Calgary Stampede grounds also has the Boyce Theatre, a venue where the annual Stampede Talent Search takes place, and where contestants not only vie for future fame, but for large cash prizes. Music genres are not limited to country, folk or blues, but everything from opera and classical to jazz, pop and rock.
A giant carnival with games and rides, themed play areas, open-air performances and a huge food fair that includes international cuisine including garlic kebabs, Jamaican jerk chicken, deep-fried sushi, teriyaki chilli corn dogs, rack of ribs, Thai noodle wraps and two-foot-long sausages – that’s what the Calgary Stampede Fair Grounds is about and more.
