British Summer Time Festival (BST Hyde Park) is a new event in London that debuted with an explosive performance by The Rolling Stones, and over the course of ten days saw 350,000 fans attend star-studded pop-rock concerts at the Great Oak Stage, The Theatre, Village Hall and the Bandstand, with headliners from Bon Jovi to Lionel Richie.
Although difficult to top Mick Jagger’s nostalgic 2nd appearance in Hyde Park (the first in 1969 - known as “Stones in the Park” - and again in 2013 on the Great Oak Stage), the organizers (AEG Live UK) do their best to continue wowing crowds with Hyde Park summer festival line-ups including Black Sabbath, Arcade Fire, Soundgarden, Libertines, McBusted, Backstreet Boys, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Tom Jones, Boyzone, The National, Faith No More, Motorhead, Scouting for Girls, Soulfly and others over two weekends of musical extravaganzas.
“Barclaycard presents British Summer Time” concerts are ticketed events held on weekends, but the park is alive with free music, performances, activities, sports, and a veritable foodie heaven with international eats and finger-licking treats at stalls, bars & restaurants all through the week. A summer carnival ambiance is in the air, at the fun fair, The Village Green, and around traders selling their wares, making BST Festival a place for weekend debauchery with friends or midweek family picnics.

One of the unique features of the British Summer Time Festival, aside from the incredible rock concert line-ups spread over two weekends (and the ten-day programme of free outdoor performances, international food, carnival and fun fair), is simply: its location.
Hyde Park is a remarkable place, one of London’s Royal Parks, with a unique history that begins with Henry VIII acquiring the “manor of Hyde” in 1536, which he turned into a private deer park until Charles I opened it as a public park in 1637. It’s the site where the Great Exhibition (the first World Fair) was held in 1851 (one of the guests was Charles Darwin), and eventually became the park most famed for its forum of public debate at Speaker’s Corner. Oddly enough, the spot where freedom of speech is openly practiced was once a place with gallows for public executions.
Although the name and those who organize & sponsor BST are new, Hyde Park festivals & concerts, with crowds of hundreds of thousands, are anything but new. Famous events include a Pink Floyd reunion, a gigantic Queen concert, the renowned 1969 Rolling Stones concert, a Bon Jovi Bounce Tour concert, and the venue where Madonna held her London MDNA World Tour concert. It’s also where “Proms in the Park” has been held since 1996.
