Boryeong Mud Festival: Filthy FunBoryeong Mud Festival began as a means to promote the natural mineral-rich mud of the Daecheon region for cosmetic purposes, but evolved into 10 days of filthy fun for locals and foreigners to massage themselves (and each other) with mud, goof about in mud parks, swoosh down muddy slides, wrestle in mud pits, decorate their bodies with coloured mud, crawl through mud mazes, land in mud prisons, run marathons in mudflats, become mud dummies, play mud football, lounge in mud baths & luxuriate in mud skin treatments. Post-mud events include traditional Korean shows, hip-hop & rock concerts, outdoor EDM clubbing, wild partying and fireworks along Daecheon Beach on the Yellow Sea in Boryeong city in the South Chungcheong province of South Korea. |

It’s a filthy fun festival with scantily-clad motley muddy mobs engaging in grimy activities in … mmm…mud!
Daecheon Beach & Namgok-dong Mudflats near Boryeong city (in the Chungcheongnam-do province of South Korea) are where one of the biggest mud parties in the world takes place with millions of mud-loving revellers mulling about in mind-blowing masses of mire for 10 mucky days. It’s dirty mud dancing, mud wrestling, debauchery, mayhem and sports with mud games (like “Mud Love” for couples) where non-muddy players are sent to mud prison, mud sliding (into a mud pool), mud falling (6 meters down into… mud), participating in mudflat marathons, skiing, football, military mudcamps, mud dummying (human mud sculpture), attending mud soap & mud pottery workshops, getting mud beauty treatments, mud-massages, mud sun-bathing lessons (tanning a-la-Korean = being covered in mud with a parasol blocking all rays), mud face & body painting (with coloured mud) and a mud beauty contest… while the little ones wallow in kiddy mudland.
Though Boryeong Mud Festival began to promote Daecheon’s mineral-rich mud cosmetics, and sponsors sell their wares/treatments, this bizarre event isn’t only about cosmetics, it’s a seriously entertaining music & arts festival with top Korean pop, rock, hip-hop and electronic concerts, a rave and nightly traditional dances/musical performances + seaside fireworks.
Boryeong Mud Fest is filthy fun with muddy mobs on Daecheon Beach in Korea!
It’s a unique festival becasue it’s all about mud on a beach in South Korea that includes bizarre activities, sports events, shows, music and lots of spicy seafood.
The main feature of Boryeong Mud Festival is lots and lots of natural, mineral-rich mud! (Yes, there are showers on-site.) Plus… many beachside events, shows, and concerts sponsored by the tourism office, are free. Things that costs money are indulging in specialty beauty treatments and high-tech mud massages, entering the inflatable mud slide and mudland play park, and whatever you buy to eat and drink (oh…and beachside showers cost a little, but not much.)
The location is pretty exotic… Boryeong South Korea (Boryeong and Daecheon are somewhat interchangeable names and refer to the same city) in Chungcheongnam-do province, which is about two hundred kilometres from Seoul – but there’s good rail and bus services.

The Mudflat Experiencing Site, along the Costal Road (with shuttle buses to take muddy festival-goers to and from the mudflats and the main square) is a zone where participants can take part in extreme sports like:
The Mud Festival Boryeong parade marches through town to the beach and includes bikini-clad gals & guys covered in grey mud. There’s also a seaside yacht parade near the beach and lots of street performers doing mud and non-mud related acts. At night, the Boryeong Mudfest programme consists of traditional Korean music & dance extravaganzas, puppetry, classical & brass band performances, hip-hop & pop-rock concerts by famous Korean stars, a rave with electronic beats and beachside fiery pyrotechnic displays. There’s also lots of eats and drinks (as with any Korean festival… the beach and streets near the festival zones veritably team with sizzling and steaming food stalls), and in Boryeong, the specialty is seafood.
This is one of the largest & wildest festivals in South Korea. It draws a couple million fans over the ten days, both Korean locals who seek mud skincare, spa treatments and massage therapies, as well as foreigners, especially English teachers, who need a break from work and a fun seaside place to party.
Boryeong mud products are produced under the name Mud Rang and can be purchased at the festival. Products include: Mud Rang body cleanser, soap, shampoo, lotion, massage cream, eye cream, facial masks and even sun protector cream. The products that are for sale are made with the mineral-rich mud (which contains bentonite and germanium said to help maintain skin elasticity) of the Daecheon Beach area, but it’s purified and blended with algae and other ingredients.
