Bestival: Rob da Bank’s Island WorldBestival is unique from the moment you board a Wightlink, Red Funnel or Hovertravel ferry and dock at Ryde Pier to enter the multi-award-winning brainchild of Rob & Josie da Bank; an island world where 50,000 fans, many in fancy-dress, flock to fixtures like Block Party, Secret Emporium, Inflatable Church, Crazy Golf, Bollywood Tent, Ambient Forest amphitheatre with dance-theatre-comedy-gigs and Magic Meadow where Sunday Night Spectaculars explode. It’s funky bars & microbreweries, organic eats & gourmet treats amidst a boutique ambiance replete with peacocks surrounded by tents & stages with eclectic British headline stars like The Prodigy, The Cure, Foals & Fatboy Slim at the green wooded country park of Robin Hill on the Isle of Wight. |
||
Bestival proclaims itself as being the brainchild of Rob Da Bank and creative director-come-wife Josie Da Bank, which would go some way to explaining its ‘alternative ethos’; support for social and environmental causes like money going towards local charities: Rob da Bank’s Music Club, Isle of Wight Toy Appeal, Isle of Wight Youth Trust, St Catherines School and Barter For Bestival; onsite support for Oxfam, RSPB, Amnesty International, Water Aid and the Legacy Project; onsite carbon emission awareness with Bike to Bestival, Swim to Bestival, LiftShare, a ton of different recycling forms including sawdust toilets – even founding the Greener Festival Alliance; a breast-feeding-mothers yurt; inflatable Church; vegetarian paradise and a non-corporate-boutique-feel.
Remember to plan ahead when travelling to Bestival, as fans will have to get either the ferry or hovercraft over to Isle of Wight, and organise transportation from there – and waving cash at local drivers wont get you far!
Fans go above and beyond when it comes to dressing up, setting a world record in 2010 when 55,000 fans set a new Guinness World Record for the most people in fancy dress at any one event. It is considered poor sport to not join in on the Saturday, but if fans forget, they can always head to the dress up tent to buy a wig, some glittery leggings, and tutu – or perhaps something a little bit more original.
Bestival is a mix of great music, boutique and fancy dress mayhem!
Bestival is a world of its own on an island in a park called Robin Hill where acts & spaces are so diverse they include things like:

Season & WeatherSeason: Summer
Temperature: 8 to 18 °C
Isle of Wight weather in September is cool to warm with little chance of rain and a good chance of sunshine. The island enjoys mild temperatures and daytime highs of up to 18, but evenings are chilly, so Bestival campers should prepare with jackets, warm socks, closed footwear, cosy sleeping bags and lots of warm blankets. Or, take nothing and book a Bestival Hospitality Camping package and stay in a Winnebago, a deluxe furnished tipi, yurt, or funky pre-erected bell tent. |
