  • Fly into the Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL).

Berlinale: Germany’s Cannes

Berlinale: one of the world’s most important cinema events, showcases 400+ multi-genre premieres and lures 20,000+ actors, indie pros and half a million fans to a 10-day extravaganza of screenings, workshops, cultural projects + the European Trade Market exhibition: one of 3 global film fairs. Events include: feature-length films vying for a Golden Bear, Panorama: controversial art films, Forum: experimental docs, Generation: kids shorts, Perspektive Deutsches Kino: German cinema, Retrospective: honouring top filmmakers + trailers/curated specials. Oozing glam with parties at exclusive clubs, Berlinale culminates when the red carpet rolls out for the Golden Bear Awards gala, presided by a star-studded jury, at the elegant Palast in Berlin.

Since 1951 Berlin has hosted Berlinale - officially Berlin International Film Festival - a global celebration in the same league as Cannes, BAFTA and the Oscars, with an eclectic program of cinema and an international film-market conference connecting top indie pros.

Deutsches Kino to Avant-Garde Indie

Cinema showings in multiple genres/categories to be awarded include: the key competition with around 25 international feature-length films contending for a Golden Bear, Berlinale Shorts: global short-films, Panorama: independent & controversial arthouse films, Forum: avant-garde and experimental features + documentaries, Generation: featuring youth & children’s films, Perspektive Deutsches Kino: for German movies, Berlinale Specials that feature cinema personalities’ films, Retrospective: showing milestones of by-gone years to honour master moviemakers, producers and directors + Homage: for lifework achievement showcases. Aside from the public program, the European Trade Market (ETM) unites film biz pros from production to distribution.

Golden Bear Awards

Berlinale’s red-carpet gala, unfolding on the penultimate day, honours the best feature-length & short films with the Silver Bear for best acting, writing, direction and production, and the Golden Bear being awarded to the best film. Side-awards are judged by an international celebrity jury, with Hollywood celebs attending or presiding the ceremonies including the likes of Werner Herzog, Roland Emmerich, Clint Eastwood, Jeremy Irons, and Meryl Streep.

Potsdamer Platz to Zoo Palast

Screenings are held throughout Berlin from modern cinemas on Potsdamer Platz, classic venues like the Zoo Palast or Delphi Filmpalast to hotels, museums and art-house theaters. The city buzzes with official Berlinale parties + side-do’s are just about everywhere!
