Bellingham Festival: Classic Virtuosos

Bellingham Festival of Music is one of North America’s premier classical music events, founded in 1993, spread over 16 days, featuring virtuoso orchestral, chamber, choir, concerts, recitals, and extravaganzas at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal. Performances have included Spanish classical guitarist Pablo Sáinz Villegas, Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, sopranos Lisette Oropesa and Joanna Mongiardo, the Calidore String Quartet + pianist Richard Goode, under the direction of orchestral conductor Michael Palmer. Concerts unfold at Western Washington University Performing Arts Center, Mount Baker Theatre, Mount Vernon’s McIntyre Hall and venues along the waterfront by the bay with Mount Baker as a backdrop in Bellingham, Washington.

About

Bellingham Festival: Classic Virtuosos

The city’s nickname “subdued excitement” defines Bellingham’s 16-day festival of classical music where orchestras, choirs, sopranos, tenors, guitarists, pianists and world renowned virtuosos converge to perform an eclectic programme, under the artistic direction of Michael Palmer, with performances that range from João Pernambuco’s Brazilian carioca adaptations to Beethoven piano sonatas. A highlight is a concert + gala reception at the cruise terminal overlooking the Bellingham Bay.

Bach, Barrios & The Romeros

Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Elgar, Mozart, Prokofiev, Schubert, Schumann, Vivaldi and Villa-Lobos are featured as well as pieces by composers such as Agustín Pío Barrios Mangoré (who captured Central & South American folk flavours in guitar pieces of baroque and romantic styles), and renditions of works by Joaquín Rodrigo, Morton Gould and Federico Moreno Torroba performed by acclaimed string quartets such as The Romeros - Celedonio Romero’s sons.

Virtuoso Guests

Guests have included classical guitarists such as Roland Dyens and Pablo Sáinz Villegas, master pianists like Richard Goode, Horacio Gutiérrez, Arnaldo Cohen and Jeremy Denk, violinists Stefan Jackiw and Janet Sung, operatic tenors Richard Clement & Wesley Rogers, baritone Charles Robert Stephens and sopranos such as Lisette Oropesa, Katie Van Kooten, Mary Jane Johnson and Joanna Mongiardo.

Bellingham Festival is subdued excitement by classical virtuosos on the bay!

Sea, Islands, Lakes, Mountains & Virtuosos

  • It’s no accident that the Bellingham Festival attracts virtuoso concert pianists, violinists, classical guitarists, renowned conductors, orchestras, operatic vocalists, sopranos, tenors, baritones, and some of the best classical musicians from around the world.
  • Michael Palmer, the festival’s artistic director, and Robert Sylvester who co-founded the event, have worked since 1993 to create one of North America’s premier classical music events, but… there’s something about the location – the fresh, luscious naturalness – that’s given them an edge.

Bellingham

The city is by the sea overlooking Bellingham Bay (and the Strait of Georgia that opens to the Gulf Islands, San Juan Islands & Vancouver Island in Canada), near two large lakes (Lake Whatcom & Lake Samish), with national parks, forests, Mount Baker to the east, and Seattle just 2 hours away.

  • An extraordinary environment to match classical virtuoso notes.
