Bažant Pohoda is 3 days of rock, pop, ska, reggae, hip-hop, jazz, swing, EDM, techno, folk, big band & world music + theatre, film, magic, literature, discussions, workshops and a late night silent disco.
The programme is so diverse it includes acts like the Buena Vista Social Club, New Orleans Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Babylon Circus, Dengue Fever (Cambodian pop + psychedelic rock), global beats by La3no Cubano & Le Chocolat Show Du Congo, and the Lemon Bucket Orchestra (a Balkan-klezmer-gypsy-punk-super band). Pohoda is rock-jazz-dance-folk + drama-film-literature on an airfield in Slovakia!
Aside from it being Slovakia’s largest music/multicultural/multimedia/visual arts event, there are four features that make Pohoda unique amongst the European summer festival circuit. First, it offers an eclectic variety of music genres that span the globe in terms of rhythm & sonic style. Second, the headline acts on Pohoda stages are renowned artists from every corner of the world, not just Europe. Third, the arts events (theatre, dance, film and literature) are a big part of the festival – with involvement by major theatres, directors, performers, dance groups, choreographers, literary authors, and filmmakers/film clubs. The fourth feature is that it takes place on an airfield where there’s room for giant stages, sports activities and complete on-site camping facilities.
Pohoda’s debut, in 1997, consisted of 1 stage where a handful of Czech, Slovakian & Russian artists entertained two thousand fans. Just 3 years later, the festival had 4 stages, each featuring diverse genres from rock-pop & world music on the main stage to techno, house, breakbeat, hip-hop and jungle on two dance stages, and a fourth for punk-rock and heavier alternative sounds. Headliners came from across Europe and 20,000 fans per day packed the Trencin exhibition grounds. As Pohoda Festival continued to grow, the eclectic variety of music increased to include almost every genre plus blends and bends of classical, big band, alternative, rock, metal, punk, pop, jazz, swing, indie, folk, ska, reggae, techno, EDM, EBM, drum & bass, hip-hop and world beats.
Bazant Pohoda Lineups have included high-profile rock, pop & jazz bands, chart-topping electronic DJs & dance music producers, trend-setting world music artists, genre-bending super groups and unusual big band and orchestral ensembles. Headline acts at Pohoda have included 808 State, Adam Beyer, AIR, Amadou & Mariam, Anna Calvi, Apache Indian and the Reggae Revolution, Asian Dub Foundation, Atoms for Peace, Babylon Circus, Bajofondo Tangoclub, Basement Jaxx, Bat for Lashes, Bloc Party, Bonobo, Caribou, Carl Craig, Cesaria Evora, Dave Clarke, Dengue Fever, Diplo, Dizzee Rascal, DJ Krush, DJ Matwa, Django Django, Dry the River, Fatboy Slim, Garbage, Green Velvet, Hadouken, Junkie, Kasabian, Kate Nash, King Krule, Klaxons, Leftfield, Lemon Bucket Orchestra, Lou Reed, Luke Slater, M. I. A., Major Lazer, Mangroove Steel Band, Mari Boine, Moby, Naibu, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Ojos de Brujo, Peaches, Pixies, Plan B, Public Enemy, Pulled Apart by Horses, The Bots, The Cribs, The Prodigy, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Stranglers, Travis, Wu Tang Clan, Za! and Zinc.
Pohoda is also an arts event with photography exhibits, dramatic productions, happenings, graffiti theatre, a cinema club with film screenings, author forums, literary discussions, dance classes, music workshops, and even some extreme sports activities like bungee jumping, tandem skydiving, hot air ballooning & zip-lining.
Since Pohoda is held at an airport, there’s an open atmosphere that’s barrier free, yet not too isolated from urban life, in fact it’s just half hour walk from the centre of Trencin to the festival site. The site itself is a non-commercial airfield where organizers erect gargantuan open-air stages and covered performance tents and arrange for food stalls, bars, shops, sports activity areas, and two fully-equipped camping zones where festival-goers can pitch tents, park caravans or stay at the Tent Hotel. Although the area is open, the ground is concrete or grass – so even if it rains (which sometimes happens) there’s not much chance of mud. Pohoda Festival organizers also have an infrastructure in place for quickly setting up extra protective areas in case of inclement weather, so the party continues for three days rain or shine.

Season & WeatherSeason: Summer
Temperature: 14 to 26 °C
Trencin weather in summer is usually sunny and warm, often hot, but the region is also prone to thunder storms, wind and severe rain spells. Although the Trencin airport facilities have concrete grounds and grassy areas that don’t get muddy, and organizers create special covered areas in case of inclement weather, they still recommend that festival-goers bring raingear, rubber boots (wellies) or waterproof shoes. |
