Battle of the Oranges: Citrus RumbleBattle of the Oranges divides 5000 townspeople into 9 teams for a violent orange fight, where fans can watch throwers, chariots and guards battle it out in an epic role play on a monumental scale where the harder the throw, the greater the respect. Traditional + fantastical garb, elaborate ceremonies, black eyes, drums & brass bands descend on the historical town for a celebration of heritage and freedom of choice dating back to 1808. A silent march closes the 3-day carnival, with a battle on each day, on Shrove Tuesday with a solemn funeral + a great respect for civility in the city. Fans turning up for the citrus explosion get red hats & lots of respect + family safety is assured, in the 6th century city, an hour from Turin - Ivrea Italy. |

The Carnival of Ivrea marries fun, history and the celebration of democracy with the Battle of Oranges (Battaglia delle Arance), giving fans the chance to get as messy as they like in a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. An explosive food fight draws townspeople to the square with one purpose: to celebrate a tradition where Ivrea civilians were freed from an evil baron and given the right to decide for themselves as to how their town is run.
Orange throwers dress in medieval garb, ranging in dramatic and fantastic colours, and are encouraged to throw their oranges at one another with as much force as possible - the greater the force showing the greater respect for the opponent - such fights often breaking into their own small duals. The battle draws in 400 foot soldiers representing the civilians making up the 9 teams alongside 50 horse-drawn carts with ‘palace guards’ aboard, making the other 1000 players, each team wearing their own colourful uniform.
Fans are given plenty of safe viewing areas above and around the square to spectate, with lots of entertainment and a fair few black eyes to see. Between the perfumed oranges, the team’s outfits and flying flags the Berretto Frigio, or, red hat that the fans are encouraged to wear, create a colourful mash which paints the city every colour plus...orange.

Battaglia delle Arance is just part of the Storico Carnevale de Ivrea or Historic Ivrea Carnival.
Legend has it that all this “orange” shenanigans dates back to 1200 A.D., and some issues revolving around sex, beheading & revolt.
And it all began with….a woman.
The woman was Violetta, a new bride who refused to deliver the “jus primae noctis” to her medieval feudal lord (not her husband), in other words, she refused to have sex with her boss on her wedding night, and instead beheaded him, which began a revolution.
Today the famous Orange Battle re-enacts that rebellion – but there are several legends regarding all the nitty-gratis of how it began.
Previous to orange throwing, beans were used. In fact beans were only substituted when, as a bi-product of having men battling & women watching, some important aspects of the fight were altered in the romantic 1800s. If the mock-fight began to re-enact an event that began because a woman did not want to have sex with someone other than her husband, somewhere along the way that concept changed when girls began tossing flowers and scented things from their balconies to attract lovers - and most exotic of all were oranges.

Ivrea weather during the carnival season is cold, in fact often freezing, with an average of about 3°C and highs of around 5°C, and there can be rain, and often cloud. Since the Battle of the Oranges is outdoors, as are all the carnival events, prepare by packing warm attire & winter jackets + footwear that’s comfy. Walking is the main means of transport between venues. |
