Free Bastille Day EventsIt’s possible to enjoy Bastille Day without buying any tickets to paid events since the parade, street shows, Fireman’s Balls, fireworks, and lots of other events, are all free. Still, you’re going to spend money on travel, food and accommodation, and you’re probably not going to be in Paris for just one day, so the best way to limit expenses is to buy a Paris City Passport and take advantage of unlimited access to transportation, a Seine cruise and entry to most of the museums.
Best views can be had from: Trocadéro, Champs de Mars, Seine, Eiffel Tower, Montparnasse and Parc de Belleville. Bastille Day in Paris: Europe’s largest military parade, an aerial show, feasts, dancing, concerts, circus, theatre, wine, debauchery and fireworks.
It’s the Fête de la Fédération, Fête Nationale, le Quatorze Juillet – commemorating the start of the French revolution with the storming of the Bastille in 1789, + the Fête de la Fèdèration in recognition of the constitutional monarchy established in 1790 (and the downfall of said monarchy via the removal of King Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette’s heads by guillotine in 1793), converted into the Fête Nationale in 1880. Today, Bastille Day on the 14th of July is the largest of all French festivals, a feast day in homes, one of the world’s biggest celebrations of freedom; a chance for patriots & partiers to indulge in liberty, equality & fraternity.
In Paris, Bastille Day celebrations begin on the 13th at free Fireman’s Balls, but the Fête Nationale officially starts with the parade from l’Arc de Triomphe via Champs-Élysées to Place de la Concorde + aerial aerobatics by the Patrouille de France, followed by free performances at the Paris Opera; shows, circus & theatre courtesy of Quartier D’Été; specials at Olympia Music Hall; concerts under the Eiffel Tower & fireworks (set off from Trocadéro at 11pm) viewable from Champs de Mars, La Tour Eiffel, cruise boats on the Seine, and spots in Parc de Belleville.

The Bastille Day parade starts around 9am at l’Arc de Triomphe (Place de l’Etoile) and follows the Champs-Élysées to Place de la Concorde; plus an overhead aerial show –défilé aérien – by the Patrouille de France that includes flybys, aerial formations, acrobatics and parachute jumps. The parade concludes around midday, but in the afternoon, the follow-up event is called Paris and Île-de-France greet their soldiers, and is held at city squares throughout Paris.
There are Fireman’s Balls at dozens of Paris fire stations on the night of July13th & 14 from 9pm-4am. Everyone is welcome and they’re completely free although there are barrels set out for those who wish to make a donation. Get Paris Fireman’s Ball addresses from the official Paris Tourism Office.
On Bastille Day the Louvre Museum is known to grant free access, and usually has a special Fête Nationale event, plus the Paris Opera often presents a free matinee performance, and there’s usually a classical music concert by the national orchestra, choir or symphonic ensemble in the area around or under La Tour Eiffel in the Champ-de-Mars & Trocadero area, and dance troupes and private street artists are usually performing in the Jardins du Trocadéro (northwest of the Palais de Chaillot) with the fountains and Eiffel Tower as a backdrop. Olympia Hall, on Boulevard des Capucines, is known to present Bastille Day spectacles - concerts, shows, performances or even a giant Fête Nationale dance party.
The organizers of Paris Quartier D’Été begin their summer programme on the 14th of July (which continues until mid August) with shows, circus acts, theatrical performances and open-air arts presentations on Paris streets, in gardens & parks, which are often free, but also have Quartier D’Été Ticketed Events at museums and funky churches.
Pyrotechnic shows begin at around 11pm on the 14th of July and continue for about half an hour. The launch site is the Trocadéro basin, and some of best views can be had from the Champs de Mars and the Trocadero area itself.
