Amphi Festival: Electro-Goth-Metal

Amphi Festival has been rattling stages since 2005 with heavy metal gothic rock and Neue Deutsche Härte seasoned with future-pop, new-wave and synthpop by groups like Camouflage, and by aggressive synth-electro industrial sounds by notorious Feindflug. Attracting a motley crowd of 16,000 fans per day, Amphi headliners span a musical gamut from Eisbrecher’s Neue Deutsche Härte to Front 242’s EBM and industrial-techno. The emphasis is on goth metal that integrates electronic vibes like those by Blutengel and Cephalgy as well as electronic body music by Apoptygma Berzerk and gothic symphonic metal by theatrical performer Lacrimosa. Amphi Festival is a heady event for dark music lovers who seek sonic frontiers at Lanxess Arena in Köln Germany.

About

Amphi Festival: Electro-Goth-Metal

Amphi is a dark music festival that gets its name from where the inaugural event was held in 2005 - the open air Gelsenkirchen Amphitheatre, yet the move to the Tanzbrunnen and then to the Lanxess Arena in Köln, didn’t alter the heady sounds resonating from its indoor and open-air stages where, for two days in July, it rocks for 16,000 fans each day.

Köln Amphi Festival Headliners

Headliners at Köln Amphi Festival have included industrial and electronic body music (EBM) by Front 242, new wave music and synthpop by German trio Camouflage, industrial electronic music by Centhron, The Klinik with Marc Verhaeghen, Mexican duo Hocico with their industrial aggrotech vibe, and Chicago heavy metal by Janus. There’s acoustic-electronic blends with Midge Ure (known for Ultravox and work with Band Aid) who melds synthpop, new wave and hard rock. A band that epitomizes the ambiance at Amphi is Lacrimosa – a duo comprised of Tilo Wolff & Anne Nurmi - who merge philosophical lyrics with Gothic rock, darkwave (Neue Deutsche Todeskunst), gothic metal and symphonic metal for dramatic performances. Amphi Festival includes theatrical and literary elements with guests such as German horror-sci-fi author Markus Heitz and radio host, journalist-author Ecki Stieg.

Cruise Concerts on the Rhine

A twist to this German metal festival are cruise ship concerts on the Rhine, with a mélange of classical, acoustic & electronic sounds, to open and close the annual festivities.

Season & Weather

Season: Summer
Temperature: 14 to 24 °C

Cologne isn’t known for being particularly sunny, even in summer. Highs and lows are mild, but there’s a fairly good chance of rain. Evenings are cool and nights are chilly so if camping, pack a tarp, ground cover and warm sleeping bags.
