CPH Jazz Festival: Giant Jam Session

Copenhagen Jazz Festival is a celebration of a musical legacy in a city that was a jazz capital in the 50s & 60s when Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Kenny Drew and Dizzy Gillespie made it their home. It’s also a tribute to Danish jazz stars such as Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Palle Mikkelborg and Alex Riel who contributed to Jazzhus Montmartre’s fame – a place that’s still one of the top 100 festival venues. For ten days, Bebop, post-bop, jazz-rock, nu-jazz and avant-garde jazz-fusion rouses a myriad quaint street-side cafés, bars, pubs and clubs with jam sessions, while concert halls, theatres and the seaside harbour park fill with sax & bass, enticing 250,000 fans to absorb the cool jazzy vibrations resonating throughout Copenhagen Denmark.

About

CPH Jazz Festival: Giant Jam Session

For 10 days bass and brass takes over Copenhagen and turns it into a giant jam session, one of Europe’s largest summer jazz festivals, with over 1,200 concerts at 100 venues for 250,000 fans. Sax, double bass, trombones, guitars and drums; concerts at DR Byen Koncerthuset, Operaen København, Det Kongelige Teater & Havneparken in Islands Brygge; cool jazzy nights with improve along moody café-laden streets, sultry sounds from the legendary Jazzhus Montmartre; stages with top jazz musicians: Gregory Porter, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Dave Holland, Joshua Redman, John Scofield, Christian McBride, Richard Bona, Manu Katché, and acts on the fringe of jazz such as Japanese post-bop-jazz-rock-fusion Hiromi, Malian world-folk-rock-blues Tinariwen and Spanish soul-jazz-flamenco Concha Buika.

Jazz Capital of the 50s & 60s

Copenhagen Jazz Festival began in 1979, but the city’s jazzy love affair blazed in the 50s & 60s when American icons such as saxophonist Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz (The Girl from Ipanema), Ben Webster (The Brute), swing violinist Stuff Smith, percussionist Ed Thigpen, trumpeter Thad Jones and pianist Kenny Drew chose Copenhagen as their home and inspired Danish greats like drummer Alex Riel, bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and composer Palle Mikkelborg. Today’s CPH Jazz Festival is a gigantic party with indoor concerts and outdoor jazz-fusion jams amidst rhythm-loving roving revellers.

CPH Jazz = 1,200 concerts at 100+ venues for 250,000 jazz fans in Copenhagen!

CPH Jazz Festival Features

A history with American jazz, contemporary avant-garde fusion line-ups, legendary jazz headliners, a myriad venues, and Copenhagen city itself, make CFH Jazz Festival a singular event for a quarter million fans each July.

CPH Jazz History

  • It’s one of the oldest, biggest & best jazz festivals in Europe.

Copenhagen (København) has had a historic love affair with American jazz greats - a relationship that began in the 1950s and continued for more than a decade, turning the city into a European jazz capital.

Jazz-Fusion

It has remained one of the most popular jazz festivals because it’s kept up with musical trends.
Appealing to a wider audience & age groups by adding styles on the fringes of jazz.

  • Jazz-rock
  • Nu-jazz
  • Avant-garde jazz-fusion
  • Latin-world beat
  • Latin-soul-jazz
  • Afropop & Caribbean zouk
  • Congolese-rumba
  • Electro-synth-jazz
  • Progressive-rock-jazz-fusion

CPH has featured electro-synth-ambient-space-jazz like what the The Zawinul Syndicate produces, and the heady blend of sounds by Angélique Kidjo that includes Afropop, Caribbean zouk, Congolese-rumba, gospel and Latin-worldbeat. Headliners such as South African cape-jazz-folk-post-bebop composer Abdullah Ibrahim have taken centre stage as well as world-blues-folk (with electric guitars & traditional drums) by Malian Tinariwen, and traditional mbube vocalists Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

  • Copenhagen Jazz concerts have included extreme ends of the jazz spectrum from Japanese progressive-rock-post-bop-jazz-fusion by Hiromi Uehara to Spanish flamenco nostalgia with latin-soul-jazz by Concha Buika.
